Oberdorf is first mentioned in 1199 as ''Obirndorf''. In 1275 it was mentioned as ''Oberndorf''.

Oberdorf has an area, , of . Of this area, 53% is used for agricultural purposes, while 38.3% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 6.7% is settled (buildings or roads) and the remainder (1.9%) is non-productive (rivers, glaciers or mountains).
