History

The primary impetus for the early development of North Fremantle was the arrival of convicts, and pensioner guards in 1850. Pensioner guards were granted land in North Fremantle. In 1851 John Bruce was granted 150 acres of land and founded the town on it. The land was surveyed and divided between other pensioner guards. By 1862, over 20 cottages had been constructed. With this construction, came the arrival of new convicts and to accommodate them, roadworks were constructed such as the first Fremantle traffic bridge. North Fremantle became an independent municipality in 1895. The municipality reunited with the
