History

Neche was laid out in 1882. The name is said to come from the

word ''nidji'', which means friend, neighbor, or one like myself. William L. Walton built automobiles in Neche from 1902 to 1906.

Of the 142 households 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.5% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 0.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 35.2% were non-families. 31.0% of households were one person and 16.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.41. The median age was 35.3 years. 27.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.9% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 23.7% were from 25 to 44; 22.4% were from 45 to 64; and 17.5% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the city was 51.8% male and 48.2% female.

Of the 169 households 33.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.8% were married couples living together, 4.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% were non-families. 29.6% of households were one person and 13.6% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.25.
