History

Motéma Music was founded in the
San Francisco Bay Area The San Francisco Bay Area, commonly known as the Bay Area, is a List of regions of California, region of California surrounding and including San Francisco Bay, and anchored by the cities of Oakland, San Francisco, and San Jose, California, S ...
. A production company since 2003, Motema was started by singer Jana Herzen to release her music, starting with her debut album ''Soup's on Fire'' 1999 released before the label had landed international distribution. She chose "Motema" because it translates to "heart" in the Bantu language Lingala. The label was officially founded in 2003 in San Francisco, and moved to New York City in 2005.
