History

Lanesboro got its start in the year 1901, following construction of the Mason City and Fort Dodge Railroad through that territory. It was named for Julius Lane, an early settler.

The average household size was 1.95 and the average family size was 2.61. The median age was 50.8 years. 15.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 15.8% were from 25 to 44; 43% were from 45 to 64; and 18.2% were 65 or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.9% male and 47.1% female.

Of the 71 households 23.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.5% were married couples living together, 2.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% were non-families. 36.6% of households were one person and 16.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.83. The age distribution was 19.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 27.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% 65 or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 120.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 117.9 males. The median household income was $25,750 and the median family income was $31,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,625 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,397. About 5.9% of families and 10.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including none of those under the age of eighteen and 17.6% of those sixty five or over.
