Early life

Hamada was born in Osaka. He was educated at the

University of Tokyo The University of Tokyo (, abbreviated as in Japanese and UTokyo in English) is a public research university in Bunkyō, Tokyo, Japan. Founded in 1877 as the nation's first modern university by the merger of several pre-westernisation era ins ...

and Kyoto University; and he studied in England.

Career

In 1917, Hamada was the first archaeology professor at the Kyoto University; and he is credited with the introduction of modern research methods in Japan. His fieldwork included archaeological digs in Japan, Korea and China. At the pinnacle of his academic career, Hamada was installed as university president in 1937.
