History

Koppel was named after Arthur Koppel of
Orenstein & Koppel Orenstein & Koppel (normally abbreviated to "O&K") was a major German engineering company specialising in railway vehicles, escalators, and heavy equipment. It was founded on April 1, 1876, in Berlin by Benno Orenstein and Arthur Koppel. Ori ...
, which was a German manufacturing company that owned 558 acres of land in nearby Big Beaver Township by 1907. In 1912, Koppel was established as a borough. The racial makeup of the borough was 98.25% White, 0.47% African American, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.35% of the population. There were 373 households, out of which 20.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.0% were married couples living together, 13.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% were non-families. 30.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.29 and the average family size was 2.83. In the borough the population was spread out, with 18.7% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 25.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
