Hermann is a small
lunar impact crater that is located in the western
Oceanus Procellarum, just over one crater diameter to the south of the
Moon's
equator
The equator is a circle of latitude, about in circumference, that divides Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. It is an imaginary line located at 0 degrees latitude, halfway between the North and South poles. The term can als ...
. It is a solitary crater with only a few tiny craterlets and some low
wrinkle ridge
A wrinkle ridge is a type of feature commonly found on lunar maria, or basalt plains. These features are low, sinuous ridges formed on the mare surface that can extend for up to several hundred kilometers. Wrinkle ridges are tectonic features cr ...

The interior floor of this crater has been flooded with
lava
Lava is molten or partially molten rock ( magma) that has been expelled from the interior of a terrestrial planet (such as Earth) or a moon onto its surface. Lava may be erupted at a volcano or through a fracture in the crust, on land or ...
, leaving a dark surface with the same
albedo as the surrounding
lunar mare. Only a low, nearly circular rim projects above the surface, which is not significantly eroded. The rim has a slight outward bulge on the western rim.
Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Hermann.
