A new company, the Kempinski Grand Hotel, opened in spring of 2003 – it used six historical buildings including the historical ''Kurhaus'' at the beach of Heiligendamm. The development has led to some conflict with residents, as main streets and cycle paths have been removed or rerouted. Also again a famous building of the ensemble was demolished.
