History

A post office called Hartville has been in operation since 1842. The community was settled in the early 19th century, and bears the name of Isaac Hart, a pioneer citizen. Much of the town was destroyed during the Battle of Hartville in 1863. Lt. Col.

About 38.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 27.0% had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average household size was 2.16 and the average family size was 2.91. In the city, the age distribution was 22.7% under 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 27.3% who were 65 or older. The median age was 44 years.
