Göschenen is first mentioned in 1280 as ''Gesschenden''. The name is from
Rumantsch ''*cascina'' (modern ''caschigna'') "alpine hut", from Latin ''capsum'' "corral", but influenced by the word for cheese, ''cascio''. The ''e'' in the first syllable is due to Germanic
