History

Grain Valley was founded in the late 1870s. The city was named for the general character of the grain-producing region. A post office called Grain Valley has been in operation since 1879. Grain Valley was founded primarily by former residents and business owners of Pink Hill, Missouri who moved to this area after the
Chicago and Alton Railroad The Alton Railroad was the final name of a railroad linking Chicago to Alton, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Kansas City, Missouri. Its predecessor, the Chicago and Alton Railroad , was purchased by the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1931 an ...
built a railway through this area in 1878, bypassing the former community of Pink Hill, Missouri. The townspeople needed to take advantage of the commerce that the railroad would provide during that era.

The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.22.
