The race was inaugurated in 1982 as the Goodwood Handicap, run by the

The following year track officials announced that California Crown day would be paused and, consequentially, the race would revert back to its original name as the Goodwood Stakes. The purse for the 2025 Goodwood Stakes has yet to be announced.
