History

Essendon West Post Office opened on 1 July 1924. From the 1850s to the early 20th century, sand was mined from the tall, cliff-like banks of the Maribyrnong River. The Maribyrnong Sand Company was set up in the early 20th century to transport the sand by barge downriver to Footscray and Yarraville, for use in the production of glass, concrete and ceramics. This area is currently within the bounds of the Afton Street Conservation Reserve where the remains can still be seen.
