At the 2000 census there were 2,524 people, 1,048 households, and 704 families living in the township. The population density was . There were 1,210 housing units at an average density of . The racial makeup of the township was 96.12% White, 2.38% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.12% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48%. Of the 1,048 households 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 29.0% of households were one person and 18.2% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.95. The age distribution was 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.6% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% 65 or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 86.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.0 males. The median household income was $24,103 and the median family income was $29,231.
