History

Dayton was named after Joe Dayton Thorn (1861-1942) in 1882 because he was one of the founding fathers of the city. Wyoming's first rodeo was held here in the 1890s and Dayton elected the first female mayor in Wyoming. Dayton was home to the San Benito Monastery, a Roman Catholic monastery associated with the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, from 1989 to 2014.
