. It is a single-elimination tournament of four rounds, with the top six seeds getting
byes in the first round. Seeding is based on regular season records.
The winner of the tournament receives the Big 12 Conference automatic bid to the NCAA Championship tournament.
Between 2005 and 2019, no current Big 12 member besides Iowa State or Kansas won the tournament, and those two schools have won 18 of 27 titles. The remaining current Big 12 schools only account for six additional tournament titles. For its first twenty-three years, no school from outside the original

The 2009 edition of the championship was held in Oklahoma City, with the event returning to Kansas City from 2010 through 2020. On October 24, 2018, it was announced that the Big 12 Tournament would stay in Kansas City through 2024, and on June 12, 2020, it was announced that it would stay in Kansas City through 2025. Kansas has won the most Big 12 postseason titles as well, winning 12 out of 25, while appearing in 15 championship games.
