History

Prior to the 1997 general election, the GRC was expanded to five members from four. During the 2025 general election, the GRC saw its first three way contest between incumbent PAP, People's Power Party (PPP) and new party Singapore United Party (SUP). The PAP team, led by Senior Minister

, won the contest with almost 79% of the vote with the other two parties receiving around 10% each. For failing to secure at least 12.5% of the vote, both PPP and SUP forfeited their election deposits.
