Whilst still at school in 1883-4 he was taught by
Émile Durkheim

, whom he greatly appreciated. His notes have provided the basis for the publication ''Durkheim's Philosophy Lectures: Notes from the Lycée de Sens Course, 1883–1884'' in 2004.
His doctoral thesis was entitled ''L'idée directrice de la dissolution opposée à celle de l'évolution''.
In 1901, he was one of the founders of the
French Philosophical Society.
