. This was the first of five consecutive Metropolitan Division titles for the Capitals. The 2015-2016 Capitals team was the second one in franchise history to win the Presidents' Trophy, after the 2009-2010 Capitals team. The 2015-2016 Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in the first round of NHL playoffs. However, the Capitals were ousted in the second round of NHL playoffs, two games to four, against the eventual Stanley Cup champions Pittsburgh Penguins.
