Trīdeksnis (also known as trejdeksnis, trīdēkslis, trīdēksnis, strīdēkslis etc.) is a Latvian percussion instrument. It consists of a short wooden handle running through three increasing width tiers of flat horizontal discs, with small triangular metal rattles hanging off the edges of the disks. The trīdeksnis is used by shaking it like a rattle or hitting the handle against the palm, causing metal discs to jingle. Courland is one of the Historical Latvian Lands in western Latvia. Courland's largest city is Liepāja, which is the third largest city in Latvia. The regions of Semigallia and Selonia are sometimes considered as part of Courland as they were formerly held by the same duke. The literal meaning of the name is "Land of Curonians". Idiophone
An idiophone is any musical instrument that creates sound primarily by the vibration of the instrument itself, without the use of air flow (as with aerophones), strings (chordophones), membranes (membranophones) or electricity ( electrophones). It is the first of the four main divisions in the original Hornbostel–Sachs system of musical instrument classification (see List of idiophones by Hornbostel–Sachs number). The early classification of Victor-Charles Mahillon called this group of instruments ''autophones''. Traditional Latvian music is often set to traditional poetry called '' dainas'', featuring pre-Christian themes and legends, drone vocal styles, and Baltic psaltery. Dainas Traditional Latvian folklore, especially the dance of the folk songs, date back well over a thousand years. More than 1.2 million texts and 30,000 melodies of folk songs have been identified. Dainas are very short, which usually consist only one or two stanzas, are unrhymed, and are in a four-footed trochaic metre. Lyrically, dainas concern themselves with native mythology, but in contrast to most similar forms, do not have any legendary heroes. Stories often revolve around pre-Christian deities like the sun goddess Saule, the moon god Mēness and, most notably, the life of people, especially its three most important events – birth, wedding, and death (including burial).
