Tractor-trailer
A semi-trailer truck (also known by a wide variety of other terms – see #Other terms, below) is the combination of a tractor unit and one or more semi-trailers to carry freight. A semi-trailer attaches to the tractor with a type of Tow hitch, hitch called a ''fifth-wheel coupling, fifth wheel''. Semi-trailer
A semi-trailer is a trailer (vehicle), trailer without a front axle. The combination of a semi-trailer and a tractor truck is called a ''semi-trailer truck'' (also known simply as a "semi-trailer", "tractor trailer", or "semi" in the United States). A large proportion of a semi-trailer's weight is supported by a tractor unit, or a detachable front-axle assembly known as a dolly (trailer), dolly, or the B-Train, tail of another trailer. The semi-trailer's weight is semi-supported (half-supported) by its own wheels, at the rear of the semi-trailer. A semi-trailer is normally equipped with landing gear (legs which can be lowered) to support it when it is uncoupled. Dolly (trailer)
A dolly is an unpowered vehicle designed for tow hitch, connection to a tractor unit, truck or prime mover vehicle with strong traction power. United States Classification by axle configuration There are several types of dolly Bogie#Articulated lorries (tractor-trailers), bogie: * Full trailer – 2 axles (4 wheels), with a Drawbar (haulage), draw bar which also controls the trailer's front axle steering. Articulated
An articulated vehicle is a vehicle which has a permanent or semi-permanent coupling in its construction. This coupling works as a large pivot joint, allowing it to bend and turn more sharply. There are many kinds, from heavy equipment to buses, trams and trains. Steam locomotives were sometimes articulated so the driving wheels could pivot around corners. A truck or lorry is a motor vehicle designed to transport freight, carry specialized payloads, or perform other utilitarian work. A logging truck or timber lorry is a large truck used to carry logs. Some have integrated flatbeds, some are discrete tractor units, and some are configured to spread a load between the tractor unit and a dollied trailer pulled behind it. Backing Up
Reversing (also known as backing up) is the process of driving a vehicle in the reverse direction in order to maneuver. Rear view mirrors are somewhat standard equipment for this endeavor. Reversing a vehicle is used as an intermediate step to complete a three point turn, J-turn, parallel park, or similar maneuver. These moves are used with the goal of positioning the vehicle in a specific way under certain space restrictions, that would not be possible to achieve whilst only moving forward. Extremely large or luxury vehicles may have in addition technical aids such as backup cameras.
