The Hollies
The Hollies are an English rock and pop band formed in Manchester in 1962. One of the leading British groups of the 1960s and into the mid-1970s, they are known for their distinctive three-part vocal harmony style. Singer Allan Clarke and rhythm guitarist/singer Graham Nash founded the band as a Merseybeat-type group in Manchester, although some of the band members came from towns further north, in east Lancashire. Nash left the group in 1968 to co-form Crosby, Stills & Nash, though he has reunited with the Hollies on occasion. As well as Clarke and Nash other members have included lead guitarist Tony Hicks, rhythm guitarist Terry Sylvester (who replaced Nash), bassists Eric Haydock and Bernie Calvert, and drummers Don Rathbone and Bobby Elliott. Eric Haydock
Eric Haydock (born Eric John Haddock; 3 February 1943 – 5 January 2019) was a British musician, best known as the original bass guitarist of the Hollies from December 1962 until July 1966. Career Haydock's first group, The Deltas, would become The Hollies in December 1962. A founding member of the Hollies, he was one of the first British musicians to play a Fender Bass VI, a six-string bass. During his short tenure with the band, he recorded bass on their earliest hits, including " Just One Look", " Look Through Any Window", and " I'm Alive" among many others. Haydock was infamous for being a practical joker, including one instance when he allegedly cut the power cords to the amplifiers being used by the Dave Clark Five on a concert bill shared with the Hollies. Steve Lauri
Steve Lauri (born 26 April 1954) is a British guitarist and a member of the rock/pop band The Hollies. Early life and education Lauri was born in London. He began performing professionally in the mid seventies. Career Lauri started his working life as an apprentice in the avionics industry with GEC Avionics in Rochester, Kent, but quit to pursue his professional music career. Lauri worked briefly on U.S. Army and Air Force bases in Germany, and then moved on to the London pub circuit. In 1977 he joined pop disco group 5000 Volts, and the group toured the UK, Europe, Scandinavia and South Africa and had two top ten hits while Lauri was with them. They also supported the Stylistics on their British tour, including their performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Bus Stop (song)
"Bus Stop" is a song recorded and released as a single by the British rock band the Hollies in 1966. It reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart. It was the Hollies' first US top ten hit, reaching No. 5 on the ''Billboard'' charts in September 1966. In Canada the song reached No. 1 and was their second top ten hit there. "I Can't Let Go" is a song co-written by Al Gorgoni and Chip Taylor, who also wrote " Wild Thing". "I Can't Let Go" was originally recorded by the blue-eyed soul singer Evie Sands on George Goldner's Blue Cat label, which was popular in New York City in 1965. "Look Through Any Window" is a song by the British beat group the Hollies. It was their follow-up single to their first UK chart-topper, " I'm Alive", and reached No.4 in the UK Singles Chart at the beginning of October 1965. "Here I Go Again" is a song by British band the Hollies, released as a single in May 1964. Background and release "Here I Go Again" was written by Mort Shuman and Clive Westlake. It was recorded on 13 April 1964 at EMI Studios and released as a single a month later by Parlophone with the B-side "Baby That's All", written by the Hollies' Allan Clarke, Tony Hicks and Graham Nash under the pseudonym Chester Mann. "Just One Look" is a song co-written by American R&B singers Doris Troy and Gregory Carroll. The recording by Doris Troy was a hit in 1963. The Hollies, Anne Murray, Linda Ronstadt and Iain Matthews each achieved success with the song. There have also been many other versions. Bernie Calvert
Bernard Bamford Calvert (born 16 September 1942) is an English former musician who played bass guitar with The Hollies from 1966 until 1981. Career He worked with several rock and roll groups during the early 1960s, most notably Rickie Shaw and the Dolphins, where he worked with future Hollies members, Tony Hicks and Bobby Elliott. Originally a pianist, Calvert, on Hicks's suggestion, switched to bass. Calvert was nicknamed "Bamf", which derived from his middle name, Bamford. After the break-up of the Dolphins, Calvert played in a number of semi-professional outfits. However, unable to advance his musical career, Calvert took a factory job until he was asked to substitute for Hollies' then bassist, Eric Haydock, in a tour of Scandinavia. Terry Sylvester
Terence “Terry” Sylvester (born 8 January 1947) is an English musician and songwriter. He is a former member of the Escorts, the Swinging Blue Jeans (1966–1969), and the Hollies. In the latter role, he took on the high parts formerly sung by Graham Nash, who had left the band in December 1968. Life and career Early career/The Escorts Sylvester grew up in Allerton, Liverpool, and attended school with future Badfinger guitarist, Joey Molland. At the age of 14, Sylvester was employed for a time as a panel beater by George Harrison's brother. The group he co-founded, the Escorts, appeared with the Beatles in the early 1960s. Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) was a folk rock supergroup comprising the American singer-songwriters David Crosby and Stephen Stills and the English-American singer-songwriter Graham Nash. When joined by the Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young, they were known as Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY). They are noted for their intricate vocal harmonies and lasting influence on American music and culture, their political activism and their tumultuous relationships.
