The Everest
The Everest is an Australian Turf Club Group 1 Weight for Age Thoroughbred horse race run over 1,200 metres on grass, turf at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney, Australia. Between 2017 and 2023 the race was classified as Special Conditions class. In 2024 the race was elevated to Group 1 status. Prize money was increased in 2018 to Australian dollar, $15 million, and in 2023 to Australian dollar, $20 million, it is the richest race in Australia and the richest turf race in the world. Randwick Racecourse
Royal Randwick Racecourse is a racecourse for horse racing located in the Eastern Suburbs (Sydney), Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. Randwick Racecourse is Crown Land leased to the Australian Turf Club and known to many Sydney racegoers as headquarters. The racecourse is located about six kilometres south-east from the Sydney Central Business District in the suburb of Randwick. The course proper has a circumference of 2224m with a home straight of 410m. On 14 October 2017, the inaugural running of The Everest was held at Royal Randwick. The Everest is the richest race in Australia and the richest turf race in the world with $15 million in prize money. Nature Strip (foaled 16 November 2014) is a retired champion Thoroughbred racehorse who was the 2020 and 2022 Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year, a nine-time Group races, Group 1 winner, and the winner of The Everest in 2021, the richest turf race in the world. Background Nature Strip was passed in for $90,000 at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling sale and sent to trainer Robert Smerdon by breeders Golden Grove Farm. Smerdon sold five 1% shares in the then un-named horse, before convincing retired businessman Rod Lyons to buy 85% and farmer Peter Baulderstone to take the remaining 10%, with the value set at $120,000. Classique Legend (foaled 8 September 2015) is an Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse that is most notable for winning the 2020 running of The Everest. Background Classique Legend was sold for A$400,000 at the 2017 Inglis Classic Yearling sale. He was purchased for Hong Kong businessman Mr Bon Ho. Racing career Classique Legend won at his race debut as a three-year-old on the 20 February 2019 at Randwick. He then went on to win two of his next three starts, culminating in victory in the Arrowfield 3YO Sprint. At just his eighth career start, Classique Legend raced in The Everest of 2019, where he finished an unlucky sixth placing, beaten 2.5 lengths behind Yes Yes Yes. Coolmore Stud, in Fethard, County Tipperary, Ireland, is the headquarters of one of the world's largest breeding operation of thoroughbred racehorses. Chris Waller (born 5 March 1973), is a Hall of Fame trainer in Australian Thoroughbred racing best known for training the racemare Winx, a four-time winner of Australian Horse of the Year honours. Background Chris Waller grew up on his parents' dairy farm in Himatangi, near Palmerston North. He became interested in racing watching horses such as Melbourne Cup winner Kiwi and jockeys such as Jimmy Cassidy. Waller worked for Foxton-based horse trainer, Patrick ("Paddy") Busuttin who was known for his top stayer Castletown. Yes Yes Yes (foaled 26 September 2016) is a retired Australian thoroughbred racehorse. He won The Everest, and over seven million dollars. Background Yes Yes Yes was purchased by Darren Weir Racing/John Foote Bloodstock for $200,000 at the Magic Millions yearling sale. Racing career Yes Yes Yes made his debut at Moonee Valley on 1 December 2018, where he "ran on well" for a second. A fortnight later, he won his first race. After settling near the rear of the field, he "came through powerfully between horses inside the final 200m". Trainer Weir was then considering entering the Magic Millions Classic, saying, "He's got the right attitude and he's got the ability. Trapeze Artist (foaled 17 September 2014) is a four-time Group 1 winning Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse. Racing career As a 2 year old Trapeze Artist won two races including the Black Opal Stakes. He also finished 6th in the Golden Slipper. As a 3 year old he won his first Group 1 race the Golden Rose Stakes by a record margin of 4 lengths after being backed in from odds of 90/1 into 40/1. Further Group 1 success was achieved by winning the TJ Smith Stakes in a race record time, bettering the race time of Black Caviar. Kerrin McEvoy (born 28 October 1980) is an Australian jockey who is best known for winning three Melbourne Cups. In Europe, McEvoy rode several big winners for Godolphin including Rule of Law in the St Leger Stakes at Doncaster in 2004 and Ibn Khaldun in the Racing Post Trophy, also at Doncaster in 2007. McEvoy rose to fame by riding Brew to victory in the 2000 Melbourne Cup. Gelding
A gelding (Help:IPA/English, /ˈɡɛldɪŋ/) is a castration, castrated male horse or other equine, such as a pony, donkey or a mule. The term is also used with certain other animals and livestock, such as domesticated Camelidae, camels. By comparison, the equivalent term for castrated male cattle would be List of cattle terminology , ''steer'' (or ''bullock''), and Wether (other), ''wether'' for sheep and goats.
