Garrett Brown
Garrett Brown (born April 6, 1942) is an American inventor, best known as the creator of the Steadicam. Brown's invention allows camera operators to film while walking without the normal shaking and jostles of a handheld camera. The Steadicam was first used in the Hal Ashby film '' Bound for Glory'' (1976), receiving an Academy Award (Best Cinematography), and since used on such films as '' Rocky'', filming Rocky's running and training sequences, and ''Return of the Jedi'', where Brown walked through a Redwood forest with the Steadicam shooting film at 1 frame per second to achieve the illusion of high speed motion during the speeder-bike chase. The Spidercam is a cable-suspended camera system which enables film and television cameras to move both vertically and horizontally over a predetermined area, typically the playing field of a sporting event such as a cricket pitch, football field or a tennis court. The name Spidercam is a trademark. The Spidercam system is modeled after Skycam, which preceded it, having been invented in the United States in 1984. The Spidercam operates with four motorized winches positioned at each corner at the base of the covered area, each of which controls a Kevlar cable connected to a gyro-stabilized camera-carrier, or dolly. James Lewis Rodnunsky (July 18, 1956 – June 10, 2011) was a Canadian-born technician, cinematographer, and inventor of the Cablecam system. Cablecam consists of cable-suspended, remote control cameras to film overhead shots. Rodnunsky's Cablecam is now widely used in sporting events, film and television. Rodnunsky's Cablecam is a direct competitor of the Skycam system, which was invented by Garrett Brown. Life and career Rodnunsky was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He moved to the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles, California, as a teen with his parents. He earned bachelor's degrees in economics and political science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). After college, Rodnunsky further studied both filmmaking and acting.
