Rockhampton is a city in the Rockhampton Region of Central Queensland, Australia. In the , the population of Rockhampton was 79,293. A common nickname for Rockhampton is "Rocky", and the demonym of Rockhampton is Rockhamptonite. The Scottish-Norwegians, Norwegian explorers Archer brothers, Charles and William Archer came across the Toonooba River in 1853 and named it in-honour of Sir Charles Augustus FitzRoy, Charles FitzRoy; they also named many local landmarks after figures in Norse mythology, including the Berserker Range named after the Norse warrior "Berserker, Baresark". The Archer brothers took-up a run near Gracemere, Queensland, Gracemere in 1855, and more settlers arrived soon thereafter, enticed by the fertile valleys. The Rockhampton Region is a local government area (LGA) in Central Queensland, Australia, located on the Tropic of Capricorn about north of Brisbane. Rockhampton is the region's major city; the region also includes the Fitzroy River, Mount Archer National Park and Berserker Range. In the , the Rockhampton Region had a population of 81,968 people. Archer Park Railway Museum is a heritage-listed former railway station and now transport museum at Denison Street, Rockhampton, Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. Frenchville is a suburb of Rockhampton in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , Frenchville had a population of 8,982 people. Geography Situated at the base of Mount Archer in the Berserker Range about seven kilometres to the north of the Fitzroy River, the district was named for French botanist Anthelme Thozet, first director of the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens in the 1860s. Fitzroy River (Queensland)
The Fitzroy River ( Darumbal: ) is a river in Central Queensland, Australia. Its catchment covers an area of , making it the largest river catchment flowing to the eastern coast of Australia. It is also the largest river basin that discharges onto the Great Barrier Reef. Course and features Formed by the confluence of the Mackenzie and Dawson rivers that drain the Expedition Range and the Carnarvon Range respectively, the Fitzroy River rises near Duaringa and flows initially north by east, then northward near the Goodedulla National Park. Gracemere is a rural town and locality in the Rockhampton Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Gracemere had a population of 12,023 people. Geography Gracemere is approximately west of the city of Rockhampton.
