Responsibletravel.com
Responsible Travel is an English travel agency and publisher. The company sells holidays it says are designed to maximise the benefit and minimise the harm involved in tourism. History Responsible Travel was founded in 2001 by Justin Francis and Harold Goodwin. Anita Roddick of The Body Shop was one of the first investors. In October 2009, Responsible Travel stopped offering carbon offsets (which it offered since 2002) claiming that people were using the offset as an excuse to pollute more. In 2014, the company removed elephant trekking and elephant performance trips from its collection. In April 2017 Responsible Travel stopped promoting holidays that included a visit to a zoo, describing them as "relics of the past". The move was supported by The Born Free Foundation. Justin Francis OBE (born 19 August 1965) is an English social entrepreneur and environmentalist. He is the co-founder and Executive Chair of responsibletravel.com (founded in 2001), one of the world's largest green travel companies, selling holidays from around the world and publishing online travel guides and responsible tourism related content. Biography Justin Francis OBE was born in 1965 in Wimbledon, London, and grew up in Bathford, Somerset. He studied Geophysics at The University of Exeter after which he worked at advertising agency J. Walter Thompson for eight years. Brighton
Brighton ( ) is a seaside resort in the city status in the United Kingdom, city of Brighton and Hove, East Sussex, England, south of London. Harold Goodwin (professor)
Harold Goodwin (born 23 June 1952) is an English educator, academic and Responsible Tourism campaigner and expert. He was Professor of Responsible Tourism Management at Leeds Metropolitan University from 2006 until 2013 and then went on to join Manchester Metropolitan University where he remains a Professor Emeritus and a senior fellow in the Institute of Place Management. He is also the responsible tourism advisor for the World Travel Market. Early life and education Goodwin was born and bred in Coventry and has lived in Faversham since 1977 where he has been chair of the Faversham Society since 2015. Anita Roddick
Dame Anita Lucia Roddick (23 October 1942 – 10 September 2007) was a British businesswoman, human rights activist and environmental campaigner, best known as the founder of The Body Shop, The Body Shop International Limited, a cosmetics company producing and retailing natural beauty products which shaped ethical consumerism. The company was one of the first to prohibit the use of products being tested on animals in some of its products and one of the first to promote fair trade with developing countries. Roddick was involved in activism and campaigning for environmental and social issues, including involvement with Greenpeace and ''The Big Issue''. The Body Shop
The Body Shop International Limited, trading as the Body Shop, is a British cosmetics, skin care, and perfume company founded in 1976 by Anita Roddick, who opened her first store in Brighton, England. Carbon Offsets
Carbon offsetting is a carbon trading mechanism that enables entities to compensate for offset greenhouse gas emissions by investing in projects that reduce, avoid, or remove emissions elsewhere. When an entity invests in a carbon offsetting program, it receives carbon credit or offset credit, which account for the net climate benefits that one entity brings to another. After certification by a government or independent certification body, credits can be traded between entities. One carbon credit represents a reduction, avoidance or removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide or its carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e). A variety of greenhouse gas reduction projects can qualify for offsets and credits depending on the scheme. The Born Free Foundation is an international wildlife charity that campaigns to "Keep Wildlife in the Wild".
