In rail transport in Europe, an open-access operator is a train operating company that takes full commercial risk, running on infrastructure owned by a third party and buying paths on a chosen route and in countries where rail services run under franchises are not subject to franchising. Bratislava main railway station ( Slovak: ''Bratislava hlavná stanica'', abbreviated as ''Bratislava hl.st.''; Hungarian: ''Pozsony főpályaudvar'') is the main railway station of the city of Bratislava, Slovakia. It averages about 60,000 passengers per day. Apart from domestic routes, international routes from this station include trains to Austria, Croatia (summer only), Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, and Switzerland. Heathrow Express
Heathrow Express is a high-frequency airport rail link operating between London Heathrow Airport and . Opened in 1998, trains run non-stop, with a journey time of 15 minutes. The service is operated jointly by Great Western Railway and Heathrow Express Operating Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Heathrow Airport Holdings. A slower (but cheaper) journey from Heathrow Airport to central London is provided by the Elizabeth line. Grand Central is an open-access train operating company in the United Kingdom. Presently a subsidiary of Arriva UK Trains, it has operated passenger rail services since December 2007. The company was founded in April 2000 as ''Grand Central Railway Company Ltd''. Three years later, the company applied to the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) to operate a two-hourly open-access service from Newcastle via the Caldervale Line and Manchester Victoria to Bolton, which was rejected. In February 2005, Grand Central successfully applied to operate four daily services from Sunderland to London King's Cross and four daily services from Bradford Interchange to London King's Cross. Saga Rail
Saga Rail was a short-lived open access operator in Sweden. It was founded by Mats Nyblom who had previously established Hector Rail. It commenced operations on 23 February 2018 with a twice weekly service from Stockholm to Linköping with intermediate stops at Nyköping and Norrköping. Transdev, formerly Veolia Transdev, is a French-based international private-sector company which operates public transport. It has operations in 17 countries and territories as of November 2020. Snälltåget is an open access railway company in Sweden with long-distance trains along the Southern Main Line in Sweden from Malmö to Stockholm as well as sleeper trains between Stockholm and Berlin and Malmö to the ski and hiking resorts in Jämtland county. History Snälltåget was set up in 2006 (first departure January 31 2007) as Veolia Transport after partial deregulation of the Swedish rail network running ad hoc services. Regular weekend services began in 2009 (expanding to weekdays in 2010), after the network was fully deregulated, running in direct competition with the state-owned operator SJ. MTRX
MTRX is a Swedish company running open access intercity railway services between Gothenburg and Stockholm. It is a subsidiary of MTR Corporation through MTR Nordic. In July 2013, MTRX was awarded paths to operate services between Gothenburg and Stockholm. MTRX commenced operations on 21 March 2015. It has purchased six Stadler Flirt electric multiple units. The trains are very similar to the Norwegian units, maximum 200 km/h, but have more comfortable seats aimed for longer distances, and a small café area. In July 2017, MTRX made headlines after a public poll to name one of its trains led to the name "Trainy McTrainface", in a nod to the near-naming of RRS Sir David Attenborough " Boaty McBoatface" in April 2016. Iryo
Iryo is a brand of Intermodalidad de Levante S.A., a private high-speed rail operator in Spain. The company is jointly owned by Trenitalia, Air Nostrum, and the infrastructure investment fund Globalvia. Trains began operating on the Madrid–Barcelona high-speed rail line in November 2022, in competition with the national railway Renfe's AVE and Avlo services, and the French-owned low-cost carrier Ouigo España. Spain is therefore the first country in Europe with three competing high-speed rail operators. Service began with 12 trains per day on the route between Madrid and Barcelona, sometimes calling at Zaragoza. Iryo added a Madrid– Cuenca–Valencia route in December 2022, with Madrid– Córdoba–Seville/ Malaga trains scheduled to start operating in March 2023 and Madrid–Albacete–Alicante trains announced for June 2023. Ouigo España
Ouigo España is an open-access operator, that operates high-speed services between Madrid and Barcelona in Spain. It is a subsidiary of SNCF, the French national railway company, and uses its trademark Ouigo. History The company was founded on December 13, 2018, under the name of Rielsfera S.A., and on September 28, 2020, it changed its name to Ouigo España S.A., in line with the Ouigo brand, previously introduced in France for low-cost services. Before using the Ouigo brand, Rielsfera considered using the Falbalá brand. After the process initiated by Adif anticipating the liberalization of passenger rail transport, in November 2020 it signed the framework agreement that grants it capacity in the main high-speed corridors.
