Narrow Gauge Lines Of The Victorian Railways
The former Victorian Railways, the state railway authority in Victoria, Australia, built a number of experimental narrow-gauge lines around the beginning of the 20th century. Although all were closed by the early 1960s, parts of two have been reopened as heritage railways. Background A depression in the early 1890s brought a halt to the rapid expansion of railways in Victoria. Politicians promoted narrow-gauge lines as a way to link remote communities, particularly in hilly country, without the expense of the railways. Railway officials opposed them, citing the inconvenience and expense of a break-of-gauge. Gembrook Railway Station
Gembrook railway station is located in the township of Gembrook, Victoria, Gembrook in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne. It was opened with the line on 18 December 1900 and closed on 30 April 1954. The line was rebuilt to the Gembrook terminus in 1998 by the Puffing Billy Railway. Heritage steam trains operated by Puffing Billy now stop at a new "Town" platform located on the site of a former siding. A "heritage" station has also been constructed on the site of the original Gembrook station. It has a layout very similar to that of the station in the 1920s, with only minor alterations to meet modern requirements. Eskdale is a town in the Shire of Towong, Victoria, Australia. It is situated in the Mitta Valley, near the river's confluence with the Little Snowy Creek, amongst the foothills of Mount Bogong. Tallangatta Railway Station

In the late 50s and early 60s, traffic at the station included collecting loaded iced wagons from the Tallangatta butter factory. Steam trains in both directions would stop at Tallangatta for the engines to top up water and crews to have a meal break, before reattaching and continuing. A railmotor ran from Tallangatta to Wodonga, leaving about 7am, to connect with the 8.10am Passenger train to Melbourne; this service ceased in September 1961. Strzelecki Railway Line
The Strzelecki railway line was a steam-era branch railway line in Victoria, Australia. The line opened in June 1922, branching off the former ''Great Southern Railway'' ( South Gippsland line) at Koo Wee Rup Station. The main line branched off the current Pakenham line at Dandenong, extending out into the South Gippsland region. Wangaratta Railway Station
Wangaratta railway station is located on the North East line in Victoria, Australia. It serves the town of the same name, and opened on 28 October 1873. History When Wangaratta opened, it was the temporary terminus of the line from Benalla, before it was extended to Wodonga on 21 November 1873. A goods shed is located across from the main platform, but has no siding, and the goods shed office was demolished in 1978. Dock platforms were once located at both ends of the station. There are footbridges at both the south end of the platform and over the northern end of the yard. The main platform and station building is located to the east of the standard gauge "West" line. Cohuna
Cohuna is a town situated north of Melbourne, on the Murray Valley Highway, in northern Victoria, Australia. At the , Cohuna had a population of 2,415. History A post office opened in the area on 18 September 1875, known as Mologa until 1876, then Cohuna, and renamed Cullen in 1884 when Cohuna Township PO opened. This latter office was renamed Cohuna around 1887. On 10 November 1915, Cohuna was connected to the Victorian Railways system when the branch line from Elmore to Cohuna was opened. The line was closed on 1 March 1981. The Cohuna Magistrates' Court closed on 1 January 1990. The Cohuna & District Historical Society has a museum that is open to visitors.
