Navigli
The navigli (; ) are a system of interconnected canals in and around Milan, in the Italian region of Lombardy, dating back as far as the Middle Ages. The system consists of five canals: Naviglio Grande, Naviglio Pavese, Naviglio Martesana, Naviglio di Paderno, Naviglio di Bereguardo. The first three were connected through Milan via the ''Fossa Interna'', also known as the Inner Ring. The urban section of the Naviglio Martesana was covered over at the beginning of the 1930s, together with the entire Inner Ring, thus sounding the death knell for the north-eastern canals. Commercial carrying continued on the Naviglio Grande, but the decline was steady and by the 1960s a project of a fluvial port to reach the Po River and consequentially the Adriatic Sea through the canals was shelved for good. Olona
The Olona (''Olona'' in Italian; ''Ulona'', ''Urona'' or ''Uòna'' in Western Lombard) is an Italian river belonging to the Po Basin, long, that runs through the Province of Varese and Metropolitan City of Milan whose course is developed entirely in Lombardy. The river born at 548 meters above sea level in the Fornaci della Riana locality at the Rasa of Varese, at the Sacro Monte di Varese, within the Campo dei Fiori Regional Park. After crossing the Valle Olona and the Alto Milanese, the Olona reaches Rho where it pours part of its water into the Canale Scolmatore Nord Ovest. After passing Pero, the river enters in Milan, where, at the exit of its underground route, it flows into the Lambro Meridionale, that flows into the Lambro at Sant'Angelo Lodigiano, in the quartier of San Cristoforo ending its course. Naviglio Grande
The Naviglio Grande is a canal in Lombardy, northern Italy, connecting the Ticino river near Tornavento ( south of Sesto Calende) to the Porta Ticinese dock, also known as the ''Darsena'', in Milan. It drops over . It varies in width from from Tornavento to Abbiategrasso, dropping to between there and Milan. Naviglio Di Bereguardo
The Bereguardo Canal () was a navigable canal, part of the Navigli system in Lombardy, Italy. A secondary branch of the Naviglio Grande, it diverges at Abbiategrasso, heading south to Bereguardo (a distance of about ). The Naviglio di Bereguardo, along with the Naviglio Grande and the Naviglio di Pavia, connect Milan to the Ticino, which then connects to the Po and eventually to the sea. The canals, called ''naviglio'' because they were navigable by boats, were an integral part of Milan's dominance over northern Italy, both as a means of transportation as well as agricultural irrigation and, eventually, hydraulic energy for manufacturing. Naviglio Pavese
The Naviglio Pavese is one of the canals making up the Navigli system in Lombardy, Italy. Once navigable, it is long and connected the city of Milan to Pavia, and through a flight of six locks to the River Ticino. Construction started in 1564, but was interrupted 20 years later just outside Milan due to technical problems: the lock there is still called ''Conca Fallata'', which in Italian means "Failed Lock". Building resumed at the beginning of the 19th century and was completed in 1819. The Naviglio della Martesana ( or ''Martesanna'' ) is a canal in the Lombardy region, Northern Italy. Running from the Adda river, in the vicinity of Trezzo sull'Adda, to Milan, it was also known as Naviglio Piccolo ( ). It is part of the system of navigli of the Milan area.
