Autun Hôtel Du Chancelier Rolin
Autun () is a subprefecture of the Saône-et-Loire department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of central-eastern France. It was founded during the Principate era of the early Roman Empire by Emperor Augustus as Augustodunum to give a Roman capital to the Gallic people Aedui, who had Bibracte as their political centre. In Roman times the city may have been home to 30,000 to 100,000 people, according to different estimates. Nowadays, the commune has a population of about 15,000. Pioneer of the Industrial Revolution in the nineteenth Century with the early exploitation of oil shale and fluorine, since the twentieth century, Autun has experienced a renewed dynamism that has made it the headquarters of several international companies (Dim, Nexans). It contains one of the six French military high schools (Lycée militaire d'Autun). The city, due to its ancient and medieval past, possesses a rich heritage that makes it one of the most important tourist sites in the heart of B ...

God Of Lantilly
The God of Amiens is a Gallo-Roman bronze statuette found in Amiens, Somme (department), Somme. The statuette, which has been dated to the end of the 1st century CE, is of a male youth sat cross-legged, with the right ear of an animal, perhaps a deer's. This statuette is on display at the Musée de Picardie. The God of Amiens has been linked iconographically with two other Gallo-Roman statues from northeastern France, the God of Besançon and God of Lantilly. These have been thought to represent a common Celtic deities, Gaulish god, whose attributes included a bunch of grapes, a serpent, and an animal ear. This god is perhaps connected with the Celtic stag god Cernunnos. Discovery and later history The statuette was found in October 1845 in the ''faubourg'' of Saint-Fuscien, in the neighbourhood of Amiens, on the property of one Captain Bournel. It was found alongside Roman coins and a bronze spoon. Saint-Fuscien appears to have been a necropolis in ancient times, as evidence of ...

Museums In Saône-et-Loire
A museum is an institution dedicated to displaying or preserving culturally or scientifically significant objects. Many museums have exhibitions of these objects on public display, and some have private collections that are used by researchers and specialists. Museums host a much wider range of objects than a library, and they usually focus on a specific theme, such as the arts, science, natural history or local history. Public museums that host exhibitions and interactive demonstrations are often tourist attractions, and many draw large numbers of visitors from outside of their host country, with the most visited museums in the world attracting millions of visitors annually. Since the establishment of the earliest known museum in ancient times, museums have been associated with academia and the preservation of rare items. Museums originated as private collections of interesting items, and not until much later did the emphasis on educating the public take root. Etymology The ...

Mathieu Le Nain
The three Le Nain brothers were painters in 17th-century France: Antoine Le Nain (c.1600–1648), Louis Le Nain (c.1603–1648), and Mathieu Le Nain (1607–1677). They produced genre works, portraits and portrait miniatures. Lives and work The brothers were born in or near Laon, in Picardy, in northern France. Mathieu was born in 1607; Antoine and Louis were originally believed to have been born in 1588 and 1593, respectively, but are now thought to have been born later; the National Gallery gives them birth dates of "c. 1600? and c. 1603?". By 1630, all three lived in Paris, where they shared the studio founded by Antoine, who was admitted to the Paris painters' guild, enabling his two brothers to train under him without paying fees. Within a few years they were receiving important commissions, Antoine painting a group portrait of the aldermen of Paris in 1632. The early paintings of the Le Nains were religious, and varied in style as the brothers passed through brief periods ...

Nativity With A Portrait Of Cardinal Jean Roulin
''Nativity with a Portrait of Cardinal Jean Roulin'' (also known as ''Nativity with Jean Roulin (cardinal), Jean Roulin'', ''Nativity of the Master of Moulins'' or ''Nativity of Autun'') is a 1480 oil on panel painting, previously attributed to the List of anonymous masters, anonymous Master of Moulins, who is now thought to be Jean Hey. The cardinal was one of the Master's protectors and this is his earliest surviving work. It was commissioned by the cardinal three years before his death and is now in the musée Rolin (the birthplace of the cardinal's father Nicolas Rolin, Nicolas). Description The cardinal is shown wearing a cardinal's ermine mozetta and red cape, with his galero above his coat of arms behind him. The dog by him is symbolic of fielity, whilst the whiteness of the veil and face of Mary, the ermine and the dog's fur refers to purity and the red of the robe to Christ's Passion. The Virgin Mary is shown with far whiter skin than the other people, showing her noble ...

Maître De Moulins
''The Moulins Triptych'', c. 1498, oil on panel, Moulins Cathedral Jean Hey (or Jean Hay) (fl. c. 1475 – c. 1505),Brigstocke 2001, p. 338 now generally identified with the artist formerly known as the Master of Moulins, was an Early Netherlandish painter working in France and the Duchy of Burgundy, and associated with the court of the Dukes of Bourbon. Life and works Little is known about Hey, whose style has led to speculation that he may have studied under Hugo van der Goes. It is possible that he spent his last years in Paris. Hey's most well-known work, the triptych in Moulins Cathedral, dates from the end of 15th century. The central panel shows the Madonna and Child adored by angels, and is flanked by portraits of the duke Pierre II and the duchess Anne de Beaujeu with their daughter Suzanne. The triptych's state of preservation is generally excellent, although at some time before the 1830s the top and bottom of the wings were trimmed (the left wing more at the ...

Gislebertus
300px, ''Last Judgment'' by Gislebertus in the west tympanum at the Autun Cathedral Gislebertus of Autun (also ''Giselbertus'' or ''Ghiselbertus''; ), was a French Romanesque sculptor, whose decoration (about 1120–35) of the Cathedral of Saint Lazare at Autun, France – consisting of numerous doorways, tympanums and capitals – represents some of the most original work of the period. Life Gislebertus first worked at Cluny, most likely as a chief assistant to the master of Cluny in 1115. His work reflects many of the biblical scenes as depicted in the bible, capturing their raw emotions. Gislebertus was taught about Jesus's compassion, and how he was loving and caring, this reflects in some of his art works around the cathedral. Originally the cathedral was created as a hospital for lepers, which were seen as diseased and almost forsaken in a sense. The reliefs at the front of the cathedral reflect imagery which would be appealing to the lepers, giving them hope. He con ...

Neptune (mythology)
Neptune ( ) is the god of freshwater and the sea in the Roman religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon.''Larousse Desk Reference Encyclopedia'', The Book People, Haydock, 1995, p. 215. In the Greek-inspired tradition, he is a brother of Jupiter and Pluto, with whom he presides over the realms of heaven, the earthly world (including the underworld), and the seas. Salacia is his wife. Depictions of Neptune in Roman mosaics, especially those in North Africa, were influenced by Hellenistic conventions. He was likely associated with freshwater springs before the sea; his festival, '' Neptunalia'', took place on July 23, during the peak of summer when water was scarcest. Like Poseidon, he was also worshipped by the Romans as a god of horses, ''Neptunus equestris,'' who was also a patron of horse-racing. Worship The theology of Neptune is limited by his close identification with the Greek god Poseidon, one of many members of the Greek pantheon whose theol ...
