Hawaii has been a notable destination for Korean immigration to the United States since the early 20th century. Origins The very first large group of Korean immigrants arrived in the United States on January 13th, 1903. The Korean Empire had issued its first English-language passports to these immigrants the previous year. They travelled on the and landed in Hawaii. The passengers were a diverse group with various ages and backgrounds. Among the group were 56 men recruited as laborers for sugarcane plantations located on various islands in the Territory of Hawaii, as well as 21 women and 25 children. Ganghwa Island
Ganghwa Island (), also Ganghwado, is an island in Ganghwa County, Incheon, South Korea. It is in the Yellow Sea and in an estuary of the Han River. The island is separated from Gimpo (on the South Korean mainland) by a narrow channel spanned by two bridges, and from Kaesong (Gaeseong) in North Korea by the main channel of the Han River. It offers some of the closest views in the South of North Korean villages, which can be seen on clear days from less than two kilometers. It is strategically located, controlling access to the river, which runs through former Joseon and South Korea's capital, Seoul. Its fortifications were repeatedly attacked in the 19th century. Syngman Rhee (; 26 March 1875 – 19 July 1965), also known by his art name Unam (), was a South Korean politician who served as the first president of South Korea from 1948 to 1960. Rhee was also the first and last president of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea from 1919 to his impeachment in 1925 and from 1947 to 1948. Philip Jaisohn
Seo Jae-pil (; January 7, 1864 – January 5, 1951), better known by his English name Philip Jaisohn, was a Korean American politician, physician, and Korean independence activist. He was the first Korean to become a naturalized citizen of the United States. He also founded the ''Tongnip sinmun'', the first Korean newspaper written entirely in Hangul. Jaisohn was one of the organizers of the failed Kapsin Coup in 1884. He was thus convicted for treason and sought refuge in the United States where he became a citizen and earned a medical doctorate. Upon returning to Korea in 1895, Jaisohn was offered a position as a chief advisor of the Joseon government.
