Jarabe
The jarabe is one of the most traditional song forms of the mariachi genre. In the Spanish language, ''jarabe'' literally means ''syrup'', which probably refers to the mixture of meters within one ''jarabe'' (compare '' salsa''). Typically, a jarabe will go from a to others sections with , , return to and end in another meter. The 6/8 rhythmic pattern is a constant pattern with no ''contratiempos'' as in the '' son jaliscience''. Although today the ''jarabes'' are instrumental songs only, the ''jarabes'' originated as a medley of favorite regional ''sones'' and ''canciones''. The regional nature of the ''jarabes'' are often visible in their name, e.g. '' Jarabe tapatío'' (''Tapatío'' is something or someone from the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco). Jarabe Tapatío
The Mexican hat dance, also known as ''Jarabe Tapatío'', is the national dance of Mexico. It originated as a courtship dance in Guadalajara, Jalisco, during the 19th century, although its elements can be traced back to the Spanish ''zambra'' and ''jarabe gitano'', which were popular during the times of the viceroyalty. Female dancers traditionally wear a '' china poblana'' outfit, while the male dancers dress as ''charros,'' and their steps are characterized by flirtatiously stepping around the brim of their partner's hat. The standard music of the ''jarabe tapatío'' was composed by Jesús González Rubio in the 19th century. However, its more common instrumental arrangement dates from the 1920s. Mariachi
Mariachi (, , ) is a genre of regional Mexican music dating back to at least the 18th century, evolving over time in the countryside of various regions of western Mexico. The usual mariachi group today consists of as many as eight violins, two trumpets and at least one guitar, including a high-pitched Mexican Vihuela and an acoustic bass guitar called a guitarrón, and all players take turns singing lead and doing backup vocals. During the 19th- and 20th-century migrations from rural areas into Guadalajara, along with the Mexican government's promotion of national culture, mariachi came to be recognized as a distinctly Mexican ''son''. Syrup
In cooking, syrup (less commonly sirup; from ; , beverage, wine and ) is a condiment that is a thick, viscous liquid consisting primarily of a Solution (chemistry), solution of sugar in water, containing a large amount of dissolved sugars but showing little tendency to deposit crystals. Salsa Music
Salsa music is a style of Latin American music, combining elements of Cuban and Puerto Rican influences. Because most of the basic musical components predate the labeling of salsa, there have been many controversies regarding its origin. Most songs considered as salsa are primarily based on son montuno and son cubano, with elements of cha-cha-chá, bolero, rumba, mambo, jazz, R&B, bomba, and plena. All of these elements are adapted to fit the basic Son montuno template when performed within the context of salsa. Originally the name salsa was used to label commercially several styles of Hispanic Caribbean music, but nowadays it is considered a musical style on its own and one of the staples of Hispanic American culture. Son Jaliscience
Son jalisciense is a variety of Mexican son music from which much of modern mariachi music is derived. This ''son'' relied on the same basic instruments, rhythms and melodies as the sones of Veracruz and the Huasteca regions, using the same string instruments. By the 19th century, Son jalisciense developed to be played with one vihuela, two violins and a guitarrón (which largely replaced the harp). Modern mariachi developed when trumpets were added to the ensemble in the 1930's, becoming a fixture of the previously all-string genre by the 1940's. Son jalisciense has both instrumental and vocal songs in this form, mostly in major keys. It is performed by mariachi ensembles.
