Galaxy mergers can occur when two (or more) Galaxy, galaxies collide. They are the most violent type of Interacting galaxy, galaxy interaction. The Gravitation, gravitational interactions between galaxies and the friction between the gas and Cosmic dust, dust have major effects on the galaxies involved, but the exact effects of such mergers depend on a wide variety of parameters such as collision angles, speeds, and relative size/composition, and are currently an extremely active area of research. NGC4676
NGC 4676, or the Mice Galaxies, are two Spiral galaxy, spiral galaxies in the constellation Coma Berenices. About 290 million light-years distant, they have begun the process of colliding and merging. Their "mice" name refers to the long tails produced by tidal force, tidal action—the relative difference between gravitational pulls on the near and far parts of each galaxy—known here as a galactic tide. It is a possibility that both galaxies, which are members of the Coma Cluster, have experienced collision, and will continue colliding until they coalesce. The colors of the galaxies are peculiar. Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy
The Canis Major Overdensity (''CMa Overdensity'') or Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy (''CMa Dwarf'') is a disputed dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group, located in the same part of the sky as the constellation Canis Major. The supposed small galaxy contains a relatively high percentage of red giants and is thought to contain an estimated one billion stars in all. At the time of its announcement, the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy was classified as an irregular galaxy and was thought to be the closest neighboring galaxy to the Earth's location in the Milky Way, located about away from the Solar System and from the Galactic Center. Jennifer Mae Lotz is an American astronomer who studies the shape and evolution of galaxies, including galaxy mergers. She works at the NOIRLab, a project of the National Science Foundation, as director of the Gemini Observatory. Early life and education Lotz is originally from Florida; she became interested in astronomy through watching the 1980 television series '' Cosmos: A Personal Voyage'' with her father, and seeing Space Shuttle trails in the sky above her home. She majored in physics at Bryn Mawr College, and was a summer intern at the Maria Mitchell Observatory on Nantucket in 1994, when Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9 collided with Jupiter. Supernovae
A supernova (: supernovae or supernovas) is a powerful and luminous explosion of a star. A supernova occurs during the last evolutionary stages of a massive star, or when a white dwarf is triggered into runaway nuclear fusion. The original object, called the ''progenitor'', either collapses to a neutron star or black hole, or is completely destroyed to form a diffuse nebula. The peak optical luminosity of a supernova can be comparable to that of an entire galaxy before fading over several weeks or months. The last supernova directly observed in the Milky Way was Kepler's Supernova in 1604, appearing not long after Tycho's Supernova in 1572, both of which were visible to the naked eye. The remnants of more recent supernovae have been found, and observations of supernovae in other galaxies suggest they occur in the Milky Way on average about three times every century.
