Ensign (flag)
An ensign is a maritime flag that is used for the national identification of a ship. It is the largest flag and is generally flown at the stern (rear) of the ship while in port. Depending on the ship's origin, it may sometimes be identical with a Jack (flag), jack on the Bow (watercraft), bow of the ship when in a port. Jacks are more common on Warship, warships than on Merchant ship, merchant ships. Etymology The Middle English is derived from the Latin word . Hikitia 2 August 2014
''Hikitia'' is a self-propelled floating steam crane in Wellington Harbour, New Zealand. She is thought to be the only working steam crane of her type in the world. She is also the sister ship to the ''Rapaki steam crane, Rapaki'', formerly of the Lyttelton, New Zealand, Port of Lyttelton, which was put on display at the New Zealand Maritime Museum after being taken out of service, and then scrapped in January 2019. Some parts from ''Rapaki'' were given to ''Hikitia''. Delivery voyage The ''Hikitia'' was built by Fleming & Ferguson of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Paisley, Scotland. After completing trials, the vessel left Greenock on 29 September 1926. The delivery voyage took 82 days, travelling via the Panama Canal to reach New Zealand. Jack (flag)
A jack is a flag flown from a short jackstaff at the Bow (ship), bow (front) of a vessel, while the Ensign (flag), ensign is flown on the stern (rear). Jacks on bowsprits or foremasts appeared in the 17th century. A country may have different jacks for different purposes, especially when (as in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands) the naval jack is forbidden to other vessels. The United Kingdom has an official civil jack; the Netherlands has several unofficial ones. Yacht Ensign
A yacht ensign is a flag allowed by some nations to be hoisted as the national ensign (instead of the civil ensign) by yachts. As with any other civil ensign, the yacht ensign is the largest flag on board, and is normally flown at the stern (rear) of the ship. Yacht ensigns differ from merchant ensigns in that their use indicates that the yacht is not carrying any cargo which requires a customs declaration.
