Dynastinae
Dynastinae or rhinoceros beetles are a subfamily of the scarabaeidae, scarab beetle family (biology), family (Scarabaeidae). Other common names – some for particular groups of rhinoceros beetles – include Hercules beetles, unicorn beetles or horn beetles. Over 1,500 species and 225 genera of rhinoceros beetles are known. Many rhinoceros beetles are well known for their unique shapes and large sizes. Some famous species are, for example, the Atlas beetle (''Chalcosoma atlas''), common rhinoceros beetle (''Xylotrupes ulysses''), elephant beetle (''Megasoma elephas''), European rhinoceros beetle (''Oryctes nasicornis''), Hercules beetle (''Dynastes hercules''), Japanese rhinoceros beetle or ''kabutomushi'' (''Allomyrina dichotoma''), ox beetle (''Strategus aloeus'') and the Eastern Hercules beetle (''Dynastes tityus''). Description The Dynastinae are among the largest of beetles, reaching more than in length, but are completely harmless to humans because they cannot ...

Eastern Hercules Beetle
''Dynastes tityus'', the eastern Hercules beetle, is a species of rhinoceros beetle native to the Eastern United States. The adult's elytron, elytra are green, gray or tan, with black markings, and the whole animal, including the male's horns, may reach in length. The larvae feed on decaying wood from various trees. Taxonomy and names ''Dynastes tityus'' is known by a number of common names, including ''eastern Hercules beetle'', ''elephant beetle'' and ''ox beetle''.. Cite by It was first given a scientific name by Carl Linnaeus, in his 1763 work ''Centuria Insectorum'', where it was called ''Scarabaeus tityus''; when Linnaeus' genus ''Scarabaeus'' was divided into smaller genera, ''S. tityus'' was renamed ''Dynastes tityus''. Description Adults of both sexes are wide, and males are long, including a long horn (the Prothorax, pronotal horn) which projects forwards from the thorax of the male; a second horn (the Clypeus (arthropod anatomy), clypeal horn) projects upwards from ...

Oryctoantiquus
''Oryctoantiquus'' is a genus of middle Eocene beetles in the Dynastinae clade. ''Oryctoantiquus'' is known for being the oldest known genus of Dynastinae and is also known for being the largest discovered Scarabaeidae so far. The genus only has one known species, ''O. borealis''. The species and genus was found in Oregon, United States (specifically north-central Oregon) and dates from around 44.6 million years to 46.8 million years ago in the Clarno formation, middle Eocene epoch. Description Based on their single known fossil, ''O. borealis'' is estimated to reach 50 mm in length, 5 millimeters longer than the previous largest known Scarabaeidae fossil, '' Cheirotonus otai''. Habitat and distribution The only known fossil of ''O. borealis'' was found west of the town Mitchell, Oregon. Fossils of flora gathered in the same area indicated that they would have lived in a tropical, forested climate at the time that they thrived. However, during the time they we ...

Oryctes Rhinoceros
''Oryctes rhinoceros'', also known as coconut rhinoceros beetle, Asiatic rhinoceros beetle, and coconut palm rhinoceros beetle, is a large species of beetle (typically 4–5 cm long), belonging to the rhinoceros beetles subfamily Dynastinae. ''Oryctes rhinoceros'' attacks Coconut, coconut palms and other palms such as the economically important Elaeis guineensis, oil palm. It can cause serious damage to the developing frond, fronds (leaves) up to death of the palm. The beetle breeds in decaying palm trunks or other organic matter like sawdust or compost heaps. Distribution The native distribution of this beetle covers most parts of tropical Asia, from India and the Maldives in the west to countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, most parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan and southern China in the east. Through human activity, it has been accidentally introduced into a larger number of tropical islands in the Pacific starting with Samoa where larvae arrived in 19 ...

Oryctini
Oryctini is a tribe of beetles in the Dynastinae (family Scarabaeidae).Bouchard, P., Y. Bousquet, A. Davies, M. Alonso-Zarazaga, J. Lawrence, C. Lyal, A. Newton, et al. (2011). "Family-group names in Coleoptera (Insecta)". ''ZooKeys, vol. 88'', 1-972. This tribe perhaps best describes the term "rhinoceros beetles" and includes important pest species in the type genus '' Oryctes''. However, the name may also be applied to genera in the Phileurini and related tribes. Members of the tribe Oryctini are large, strongly build beetles with a thick cuticle. The adults are typically between 25 and 60 mm long and most often dark brown to black. The size and also the structures on the head and pronotum of males can depend on the suitability of the breeding medium where the larvae develop. More specifically, the members of the tribe can be separated from other tribes of dynastid beetles by a combination of features. The most important ones are: * They have an elongated body with the sides ...

Scarabaeidae
The family Scarabaeidae, as currently defined, consists of over 35,000 species of beetles worldwide; they are often called scarabs or scarab beetles. The classification of this family has undergone significant change. Several groups formerly treated as subfamilies have been elevated to family rank (e.g., Bolboceratidae, Geotrupidae, Glaresidae, Glaphyridae, Hybosoridae, Ochodaeidae, and Pleocomidae), and some reduced to lower ranks. The subfamilies listed in this article are in accordance with those in Catalog of Life (2023). Description Scarabs are stout-bodied beetles; most are brown or black in colour, but many, generally species that are diurnally active, have bright metallic colours, measuring between . The antenna (biology), antennae of most species superficially seem to be knobbed (capitate), but the several segments comprising the head of the antenna are, as a rule, lamellate: they extend laterally into plates called lamella (zoology), lamellae that they usually ...

Elephant Beetle
The elephant beetle (''Megasoma elephas'') is a member of the family Scarabaeidae and the subfamily Dynastinae. Elephant beetles are Neotropical rhinoceros beetles. Appearance Elephant beetles are black in color and covered with a coat of fine microscopic hairs. The hairs grow particularly thick on the beetle's elytra. The hairs give the beetle's body a yellowish color. Males have two horns protruding from the head and another from the prothorax. The longest head horn gives the beetle its common name, since it resembles an elephant’s trunk. Females have no horns. The horns are used for defense, and in competition among males for food and mates. Size In size, elephant beetles typically range between 7 and 12 cm (2.75–4.75 in), with the largest male specimen known measuring 13.7 cm, including the horn. Location Elephant beetles are located in southern Mexico, Central America, and in South American rainforests. List of subspecies * ''Megasoma elephas elephas'' ...

Ox Beetle
''Strategus aloeus'', the ox beetle, is a species of rhinoceros beetle native to the Americas. Description The "major" males of this species have three large horns on their thoraces, resembling ''Triceratops''. The "minor" males have horns, as well, but the two back ones are small and the frontal horn is much shorter than the horn in major males. The female ox beetle has a very short horn which has little use in fighting, but is used for digging in the ground. These beetles grow to about long as adults when the horns are excluded in the males. Distribution Although this species occurs in the southern United States, its populations are much higher in the Neotropical realm The Neotropical realm is one of the eight biogeographic realms constituting Earth's land surface. Atlas Beetle
The Atlas beetle (''Chalcosoma atlas'') is a very large species of beetle in the family Scarabaeidae, found in Southeast Asia. Males have three prominent horns. The species is named for Atlas, the giant of Greek mythology who supported the skies. Description ''Chalcosoma atlas'', like other beetles of the genus '' Chalcosoma'', is remarkable for its size. As is common in the Scarabaeidae, males are larger than the females, reaching a length of about ; females are about . Males have specialised horns on their head and thorax that they use to fight with each other, to gain mating rights with females. The Atlas beetle differs from other ''Chalcosoma'' species (such as '' C. caucasus'') by the broader end of the cephalic (head) horn. Larvae The larva of the Atlas beetle is known for its fierce behavior, including biting if touched. Unverified reports exist of larvae that live together fighting to the death if they have insufficient space or food. Distribution ''Chalcosoma atlas'' ...
