Dragster (car)
A dragster is a specialized competition automobile used in drag racing. Dragsters, also commonly called "diggers", can be broadly placed in three categories, based on the fuel they use: gasoline, methanol, and nitromethane. They are most commonly single-engined, though twin-engined and quad-engined designs did race in the 1950s and 1960s. The design of dragsters evolved from the front-engined rail (named for the exposed frame rails) of the earliest days of drag racing, into the "slingshot" (with the driver between or behind the rear tires, or "slicks") of the early to middle 1960s, to the "modern" type common in the 1970s. Depending on the class they run in, dragsters can be injected or supercharged (or turbocharged), with a variety of possible engines. Steve Swaja
Steve Swaja is an American dragster designer in the 1960s. Swaja was responsible for both Tony Nancy wedge cars of 1963, the ''Yellow Fang'' slingshot in 1963, and "TV Tommy" Ivo's ''Videoliner'' in 1965. He designed Tony Nancy's first dragster, "The Silver Car", in 1963; it was built at Tommy Ivo & d Rod Pepmuller's shop, with the aluminum bending done by Bob Sorrell; the car won "Best Engineered" at its debut, the 1963 Winternationals. ''Pawnbroker'' is a pioneering rear-engined dragster built in 1969. History In 1969, prodded to action by the death of John Mulligan earlier in the year, Woody Gilmore (following the mid-engined Funny Car he built for Doug Thorley) and Pat Foster developed a rear-engined fuel dragster, which was unveiled in December.Burgess, Phil, ''National Dragster'' editor. Lions Drag Strip
Lions Drag Strip was an American raceway in the Wilmington district of Los Angeles, California, adjacent to Long Beach that existed from 1955 to 1972. The track was named after its sponsors Lions Clubs International and featured many races that were sanctioned by the American Hot Rod Association (AHRA). As the area surrounding the track increased in population, complaints regarding noise were made to government officials. Subsequently, efforts were made to deny the operators of track continued use of the facility. The track was opened with a 30 days' notice clause that could be enforced at any time, and on November 2, 1972, that notice was given. After the last races took place on December 2, 1972, the track was torn down through the efforts of the Los Angeles Harbor Department to make space for overseas shipping cargo containers which exists to this day at 223rd Street & Alameda Street in Wilmington, CA. Woody Gilmore
Woody Gilmore (2 February 1933 – 3 July 2020) was a dragster and funny car chassis builder in the 1960s and 1970s. Gilmore built the chassis for the top fuel streamliner '' Hustler VI'' in 1965. In 1968, Doug Thorley bought a rear-engined Javelin funny car from Gilmore, powered by an AMC 401. Andy Granatelli
Anthony "Andy" Granatelli (March 18, 1923 – December 29, 2013) was an American businessman, most prominent as the CEO of STP as well as a major figure in automobile racing events. Granatelli was born in Dallas, Texas. Along with his brothers Vince and Joe, he first worked as an auto mechanic and "speed-shop" entrepreneur, modifying engines such as the flathead Ford into racing-quality equipment. During World War II, he became a promoter of automobile racing events, such as the "Hurricane Racing Association", which combined racing opportunities for up-and-coming drivers with crowd-pleasing theatrics. Hurricane events, according to Granatelli in his autobiography ''They Call Me Mister 500'', included drivers who were experts at executing—and surviving—roll-over and end-over-end crashes, and also an ambulance that not only got caught up into the race but also ejected a stretcher (with a dummy on it) into the way of the racers. Logghe Stamping Company
The Logghe Stamping Company (commonly known as Logghe Brothers) is a dragster and funny car fabricator based in Detroit, Michigan. Logghe Brothers, operated by brothers Ron and Gene, was the first company to produce funny car chassis in series, beginning in 1966, when they built Don Nicholson's '' Eliminator I'', with a reproduction Mercury Comet body provided by Fiberglass Trends. Similar cars were sold to Jack Chrisman, "Fast Eddie" Schartman, and Kenz and Leslie. These cars had the first coilover suspension in funny car. In 1967, Logghe would provide the chassis for Ford's '' Super Mustang'' slingshot dragster project.
