Combat pistol shooting is a modern martial art that focuses on the use of the handgun as a defensive weapon for self defense, or for military and police use. Like most martial arts, combat pistol shooting is practiced both for defense and for sport. Many of the action shooting disciplines are based on combat pistol techniques, and take the form of simulations of defensive or combat situations. History Combat pistol shooting, as separate from target shooting, began to evolve in the early 1900s. Benchmarking is the practice of comparing business processes and performance metrics to industry bests and best practices from other companies. Dimensions typically measured are quality, time and cost. World War II combatives are close quarters combat techniques including hand-to-hand fighting, advanced firearm point shooting methods and weapons techniques (knife/bayonet/improvised weapons) that were taught to allied special forces in World War II by notable instructors such as Rex Applegate and William Ewart Fairbairn. Buttstroke
A buttstroke or butt-stroking is the act of striking someone with the buttstock of a rifle, shotgun, or other long gun. It is a common case of the use of a firearm as a blunt weapon. Buttstroke is among the major offensive techniques with the rifle and bayonet in close-at-hand combat and is the recommended method of close combat if the rifleman has no bayonet or sidearm available. Pistol-whipping
Pistol-whipping or buffaloing is the act of using a handgun as a blunt weapon, wielding it as an improvised club. Such a practice dates to the time of muzzle loaders, which were brandished in such fashion in close-quarters combat once the weapon's single projectile had been expended. Etymology The term "buffaloing" is documented as being used in the Wild West originally to refer to the act of being intimidated or cheated by bluffing. It would develop into a term meaning to strike someone with a handgun in the 1870s when Stuart N. Lake reported Wyatt Earp doing so. Wild Bill Hickok would also be a prominent practitioner of the technique. The new use of the term developed because the act of hitting someone with their revolver was seen as an additional insult to the character of the victim. Gun Fu
''Gun fu'', a portmanteau of '' gun'' and ''kung fu'' (also known as gun kata, bullet ballet, and gymnastic gunplay), is a style of sophisticated close-quarters gunfight resembling a martial arts battle that combines firearms with hand-to-hand combat and traditional melee weapons in an approximately 50/50 ratio. It can be seen in Hong Kong action cinema, and in American action films influenced by it. The focus of ''gun fu'' is both artistic style and the usage of firearms in ways that they were not designed to be used. Charles Henle Klein, Jr. (born March 20, 1942), is an American author, best known for writing about police ethics, and the technique of instinct combat shooting, He is also a firearms instructor, a former law enforcement officer and a retired private investigator. Career Klein was a police officer in Ohio from 1968 to 1975 and later his family had moved to Indiana and Klein became a police officer there. He is a NRA (National Rifle Association) certified firearms instructor in five disciplines and is a former staff instructor for Tactical Defense Institute. From 1979 to 2004, Chuck Klein was licensed as a private detective in Indiana and then Ohio. In 1992, Klein wrote "America Is Beautiful", which was read into the U.S. Congressional Record. Submachine Gun
A submachine gun (SMG) is a magazine-fed, automatic carbine designed to fire handgun cartridges. The term "submachine gun" was coined by John T. Thompson, the inventor of the Thompson submachine gun, to describe its design concept as an automatic firearm with notably less firepower than a machine gun (hence the prefix " sub-"). As a machine gun must fire rifle cartridges to be classified as such, submachine guns are not considered machine guns. Red Dot Sight
A red dot sight is a common classification for a type of non- magnifying reflector (or reflex) sight for firearms, and other devices that require aiming, that gives the user a point of aim in the form of an illuminated red dot. A standard design uses a red light-emitting diode (LED) at the focus of collimating optics which generates a dot-style illuminated reticle that stays in alignment with the weapon the sight is attached to, regardless of eye position (nearly parallax free). They are considered to be fast-acquisition and easy-to-use gun sights for civilian target shooting, hunting, or in police and military applications.
