Cell Autonomous Sex Identity (CASI) refers to the intrinsic determination of a cell's sex-specific characteristics based on its Genetics, genetic and Epigenetics, epigenetic makeup, independent of external Hormone, hormonal influences. Unlike traditional models of Sexual differentiation, sex differentiation, which emphasize the role of gonadal hormones in directing Cell (biology), cellular and Tissue (biology), tissue-level sexual traits, CASI highlights the ability of individual cells to express their sexual identity autonomously. This concept has significant implications for understanding sexual dimorphism, development, and the evolutionary diversity of sex determination mechanisms across species.
