Area Code 334
Area code 334 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for southeastern Alabama. It was created on January 15, 1995, in an area code split from area code 205. It was the first new area code in Alabama since the announcement of the area code system in 1947. To permit a transition period for the reconfiguration of equipment, such as computers and fax machines, use of area code 205 continued in the 334 region through May 13, 1995. The numbering plan area (NPA) comprises the Montgomery, Alabama, Montgomery, Auburn, Alabama, Auburn-Opelika, Alabama, Opelika, and Dothan, Alabama, Dothan metropolitan areas, as well as Phenix City, Alabama, Phenix City and the Alabama side of the Columbus, Georgia metro area. The numbering plan area (NPA) serves all of western Washington outside urban King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties and Bainbridge Island, Prior to January 15, 1995, when the area code was put into service, the numbering plan area (NPA) was served by area code 206, Washington's original area code since 1947. Area Codes 706 And 762
Area codes 706 and 762 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the northern and west central parts of Georgia, but excluding metropolitan Atlanta. The numbering plan area (NPA) is divided into three disconnected geographical regions. A small section is in west-central Georgia, in the region around Columbus. This is bordered by area code 334 to the west in Alabama, area code 478 to the east, area code 229 to the south, and metro Atlanta's 404, 678, 770, and 470. It does not border the landline area of 404, only the cellphone area. Additionally, the Yatesville rate center is in area codes 706 and 762, but not adjacent to any other rate centers in 706/762. The Yatesville rate center shares a small border with 770 to the north, but is almost surrounded by 478 to the south, east, and west. The major section of 706 wraps around from Rome in northwest Georgia, east through the mountains past Dahlonega, meeting its narrowest point at Toccoa, ...

Area Code 850
Area codes 850 and 448 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan for the Florida panhandle, including Pensacola, Tallahassee and Panama City. Area code 850 was created in 1997 in a split of 904 and area code 448 was assigned as a second code to the same area in an overlay plan in 2019. History When the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) designed the initial version of the first nationwide telephone numbering plan for Operator Toll Dialing, the predecessor of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), in 1947, the entire state of Florida was designated a single numbering plan area (NPA), and assigned the area code 305. In 1953, the western part of the peninsula from the Tampa Bay area southward received area code 813, and in 1965, North Florida from the panhandle to Jacksonville was assigned area code 904 to mitigate the demand for telephone service for the state's growth in population. For thirty years, North Florida remained a single NPA until 1995 ...

Area Code 251
Area code 251 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for southwestern Alabama, serving Mobile, Baldwin, and Washington counties and parts of six other counties. It was created on June 18, 2001, as a split from area code 334. In order to allow people time to reprogram electronics such as computers, cell phones, pagers and fax machines, use of the 334 area code continued in the 251 areas through January 7, 2002. Prior to October 2021, area code 251 had telephone numbers assigned for the central office code 988. In 2020, ''988'' was designated nationwide as a dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, which created a conflict for exchanges that permit seven-digit dialing. This area code was therefore scheduled to transition to ten-digit dialing by October 24, 2021. Service area The numbering plan area comprises the following cities. * Atmore *Axis * Bay Minette * Bayou la Batre * Bon Secour * Brewton * Chatom *Chickasaw * Citronelle ...

Area Code 938
Area codes 256 and 938 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for North Alabama, as well as some eastern portions of the state. The two area codes form an overlay plan for the same numbering plan area. Area code 256 was created in 1998, and 938 was added in 2010. History Area code 256 was created on March 23, 1998, in an area code split from area code 205. A permissive dialing period, that permitted time to reprogram computers, cell phones, pagers and fax machines, allowed the use of 205 through September 28, 1998. In March 2009, the Alabama Public Service Commission announced that the state's first all-services overlay area code, 938, would be added to the area of the 256 area code "sometime in 2011". As a result, ten-digit dialing was implemented for all numbers in the area with voluntary compliance beginning on November 7, 2009, and mandatory use by June 5, 2010, instead of dialing 7 digits. The 938 area code took effect on July 10, 2010. This ...

Area Codes 205 And 659
Area codes 205 and 659 are telephone area codes in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the western and central parts of the U.S. state of Alabama, including the cities of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa. Area code 205 was one of the original North American area codes created in 1947 when AT&T created the first continental telephone numbering plan. The numbering plan area comprised the entire state, making Alabama one of 34 states served by a single area code. By the 1990s, 205 was nearing exhaustion of central office prefixes due to the state's growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. In 1995, area code 334 was created to serve the area from Montgomery southward, reducing the geographic extent of 205. The numbering plan area was further reduced in 1998, when the northern and eastern portions were assigned area code 256. In October 2019, area code 659 was added as a second area code to the 205 numbering plan area, creating as an overlay plan for the region. Th ...

List Of NANP Area Codes
The North American Numbering Plan (NANP) divides the territories of its members into geographic numbering plan areas (NPAs). Each NPA is identified by one or more numbering plan area codes (''NPA codes'', or ''area codes''), consisting of three digits that are prefixed to each local telephone number having seven digits. A numbering plan area with multiple area codes is called an overlay plan, overlay. Area codes are also assigned for non-geographic purposes. The rules for numbering NPAs do not permit the digits ''0'' and ''1'' in the leading position.AT&T (1955) ''Notes on Distance Dialing'' Area codes with two identical trailing digits are ''easily recognizable codes'' (ERC). NPAs with ''9'' in the second position are reserved for future format expansion. Area codes in numerical order Area codes that are not in use are listed in italic type face; and unassignable codes are bolded. The column ''Date'' lists either the date or year of assignment before implementation, or the in-se ...
