Zharkovsky (urban-type Settlement)
Zharkovsky (russian: Жарко́вский) is an urban-type settlement and the administrative center of Zharkovsky District of Tver Oblast, Russia. It is located on the banks of the Mezha River. Population: History Before 1945, there were several villages in the place of current urban-type settlement, including the village of Zharki. It belonged to Smolensk Governorate. In the end of the 1920s, a saw mill was built, and eventually it was connected with the railway to the main railroad connecting Moscow and Riga. The railway was in operation since 1930. On 12 July 1929, governorates and uyezds were abolished, and the area was included into Oktyabrsky District of Western Oblast. It belonged to Velikiye Luki Okrug. On August 1, 1930 the okrugs were abolished, and the districts were subordinated directly to the oblast. Tver Oblast
Tver Oblast (russian: Тверска́я о́бласть, ''Tverskaya oblast'', ), from 1935 to 1990 known as Kalinin Oblast (), is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). Its administrative center is the city of Tver. It was named after Mikhail Kalinin, the Soviet revolutionary. Population: 1,353,392 ( 2010 Census). Tver Oblast is a region of lakes, such as Seliger and Brosno. Much of the remaining area is occupied by the Valdai Hills, where the Volga, the Western Dvina, and the Dnieper have their source. Mezha River
The Mezha (russian: Межа) is a river in Nelidovsky, Zharkovsky, and Zapadnodvinsky Districts of Tver Oblast and Velizhsky District of Smolensk Oblast in Russia. It flows out of the Valdai Hills and continues west into the Daugava (Western Dvina). The town of Nelidovo and the urban-type settlement of Zharkovsky are located along the Mezha. It is long, and the area of its basin . Its main tributaries are the Bereza, the Luchesa, the Obsha, and the Yelsha (all left). The source of the Mezha is in the north-western part of Nelidovsky District, within the Central Forest Nature Reserve, a highly protected natural area.
