Zuni People
The Zuni (; formerly spelled ''Zuñi'') are Native American Pueblo peoples native to the Zuni River valley. The Zuni people today are federally recognized as the Zuni Tribe of the Zuni Reservation, New Mexico, and most live in the Pueblo of Zuni on the Zuni River, a tributary of the Little Colorado River, in western New Mexico, United States. The Pueblo of Zuni is south of Gallup, New Mexico. The Zuni tribe lived in multi level adobe houses. In addition to the reservation, the tribe owns trust lands in Catron County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona. The Zuni call their homeland ''Halona Idiwan’a ''or Middle Place. Zuni Language
Zuni (also formerly Zuñi, endonym ) is a language of the Zuni people, indigenous to western New Mexico and eastern Arizona in the United States. It is spoken by around 9,500 people, especially in the vicinity of Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico, and much smaller numbers in parts of Arizona. Unlike most indigenous languages in the United States, Zuni is still spoken by a significant number of children and, thus, is comparatively less threatened with language endangerment. Edmund Ladd reported in 1994 that Zuni is still the main language of communication in the pueblo and is used in the home (Newman 1996). The Zuni name for their own language, ' (''shiwi'' "Zuni" + ''-ʼma'' "vernacular"; pronounced ) can be translated as "Zuni way", whereas its speakers are collectively known as ''ʼA:shiwi'' (''ʼa:(w)-'' "plural" + ''shiwi'' "Zuni"). Zuni, Virginia
Zuni () is an unincorporated community in Isle of Wight County in the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia, United States. It also gives its name to the 1000 acre Zuni Pine Preserve, with its associated Antioch Pines Natural Area Preserve operated by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCR) and Blackwater Ecological Preserve operated by Old Dominion University in conjunction with the DCR. Zuni sits on the banks of the Blackwater River, which separates Isle of Wight County and Southampton County. In addition to a post office, Zuni has a general store, gas station, small engine repair shop and two churches. In the mid-20th century Zuni also had hotels, a bank and other businesses, but suffered severe storm damage during Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and the Blackwater River flooded again in 2006. Zuni Pueblo, New Mexico
Zuni Pueblo (also Zuñi Pueblo, Zuni: ''Halona Idiwan’a'' meaning "Middle Place") is a census-designated place (CDP) in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 6,176 as of the 2020 Census. It is inhabited largely by members of the Zuni people. Geography The community is within the Zuni Indian Reservation or Pueblo of Zuni in southwestern McKinley County, south of Gallup, the county seat, and east of the Arizona border. It is bordered to the east by the smaller community of Black Rock. Zuni River
The Zuni (Zuñi) River is a tributary of the Little Colorado River in the southwestern United States. It has its origin in Cibola County, New Mexico, in the Zuñi Mountains at the Continental Divide. The river flows off the western slopes of the Zuñi Mountains in a generally southwesterly direction through the Zuni Indian Reservation to join the Little Colorado River in eastern Arizona. Zuni Café
Zuni Café is a restaurant in San Francisco, California, named after the Zuni tribe of indigenous Pueblo peoples of Arizona and New Mexico. It occupies a triangular building on Market Street at the corner of Rose Street. History Zuni Café was established in 1979 by Billy West. In 1981 he hired Vince Calcagno as the manager, who became a business partner in 1987. From its inception it was a gay gathering place. Originally there was little money or space for cooking equipment: West grilled steaks illegally in the alley on a Weber grill. After a recommendatiion from Elizabeth David, Zuni Café became popular, and in 1984 Patricia Unterman wrote in a ''San Francisco Chronicle'' review: "The open kitchen at last has stoves, grills, counters, and refrigeration. ...There's enough money in the bank to support a good wine list." The Zuni 5-inch Folding-Fin Aircraft Rocket (FFAR), or simply Zuni, is a unguided rocket developed by the Hunter Douglas Division of Bridgeport Brass Company and deployed by the United States Armed Forces, and the French Air Force. The rocket was developed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations. It can be used to carry various types of warheads, including chaff for countermeasures. It is usually fired from the LAU-10 rocket pod holding four rockets. Applebay Zuni
The Applebay Zuni and Zuni II are single-seat, water-ballasted gliders designed to compete in the FAI 15m class. In February 2015 the New Mexico State Legislature named the Zuni the ''Official State Glider''. Design and development The Soaring Society of America announced a sailplane design competition, in 1970, with the intention of giving American glider pilots the opportunity to fly competitive American designed and built aircraft in International competitions. George Applebay designed the Applebay Mescalero Open class glider for this competition, but the closing date passed long before the aircraft was ready.
