Wilhelm Zahn
Wilhelm Zahn (29 July 1910 – 14 November 1976) was a German ''Kriegsmarine'' officer during the ''Second World War''. He began his career as a U-boat First Watch Officer, then advanced to the rank of commander and was finally promoted to ''Korvettenkapitän'' on 1 April 1943. As commander of ''U-56'' he was able to avoid detection by the destroyers surrounding and came in close proximity to the British flagship, launching three torpedoes against her whilst she was carrying Winston Churchill and two senior officers of the British Navy. Following that incident he became widely known as the "man who almost killed Churchill" amongst the U-boat submariner corps. Wilhelm Johann Karl Zahn (21 August 1800 in Rodenberg, Schaumburg – 22 August 1871 in Berlin) was a German architect, painter, art critic and design researcher particularly of Roman interior designs found in the ruins of Pompeii. Wilhelm was born as the fourth of five children of painter Bernhard Zahn, and his wife, Christiane, née Weis according to church records. He attended high schools in Bückeburg and Rinteln where he received a universal education. It was in Rinteln where Zahn studied the classics under a Professor Stein who Zahn remembered with particular affection. Gordon Zahn (born Gordon Charles Paul Roach; August 7, 1918 – December 9, 2007) was an American sociologist, pacifist, professor, and author. Early life Born out of wedlock, Zahn took his stepfather's last name. During World War II, he was a conscientious objector, and served in a Civilian Public Service camp established by the Catholic Worker Movement. Zahn later transferred to Rosewood State Training School in Maryland, a school for the developmentally disabled. He worked there as a conscientious objector until April 1946. His experiences at Rosewood were published in the Catholic Worker in the July and October 1946 issues, as a continuation of his attempt to reform Rosewood. Robert Zahn (23 March 1861 in Münchberg– 21 January 1914 in Leipzig) was a German engineer and industrialist. Zahn started designing embroidery machines. As the director of the ''Vogtländische Maschinenfabrik (VOMAG)'' at a later stage, he played a major role in the technical perfection of the machines being produced there. Shammai Zahn (6 July 1920 – 4 March 2001) was a Polish-born rabbi who was the chief rabbi of the Jewish community of Sunderland, United Kingdom and rosh yeshiva of the Sunderland Yeshiva. Early life Zahn was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1920 to Meshulam Zushe and Pessel Zirel Zahn. He held Polish citizenship. He began his education at the Würzburg teachers' seminary but fled to Britain in 1939, escaping the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany. Albert Zahn was a self-taught sculptor from the Prussian province of Pomerania, who lived and worked in Door County, Wisconsin, Door County, Wisconsin, United States for most of his life. Ernst Zahn (24 January 1867 in Zürich, Switzerland – 12 February 1952 in Meggen) was a Swiss people, Swiss author. His writing took its themes from Swiss local life.
