The song was written by Conley along with Randy Scruggs Randy Lynn Scruggs (August 3, 1953 – April 17, 2018) was an American music producer, songwriter and guitarist. He had his first recording at the age of 13. He won four Grammy Awards and was named Musician of the Year at the Country Music ..., and was released in April 1983 as the lead single from the album '' Don't Make It Easy for Me''. The song was Conley's third number one on the country chart. The single went to number one for one week and spent a total of thirteen weeks on the country chart. New York: Oxford University Press. p. 108. was an American country music singer-songwriter. Between 1980 and 2003, he recorded ten studio albums, including seven for RCA Records. In the 1980s and into the 1990s, Conley also charted more than thirty singles on the '' Billboard'' Hot Country Songs chart, of which eighteen reached Number One. His eighteen ''Billboard'' Number One country singles during the 1980s were the third most by any artist in any genre during that decade, after Alabama and Ronnie Milsap. Biography Early life Conley was born October 17, 1941, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to Glenna Ruth (née Davis; 1918–2002) and Arthur Conley (1910–1989). When he was fourteen, his father lost his job with the r
