Young Lords
The Young Lords, also known as the Young Lords Organization (YLO), were a left-wing political organization that originally developed from a Chicago street gang. With major branches in Chicago and New York City, they were known for their direct action campaigns, including building occupations, sit-ins, and garbage-dumping protests. They also provided community service programs for the neighborhoods they operated in, including childcare and medical services, as well as free breakfasts. Under the leadership of José "Cha Cha" Jiménez, who was inspired by civil rights leaders and the Black Panther Party, the Chicago Young Lords allied themselves with various socialist organizations. They also opposed urban renewal plans pursued by the city in Lincoln Park and engaged in various direct action campaigns to demand resources and services for the Puerto Rican community there. Puerto Rican Revolutionary Workers Organization
The Puerto Rican Revolutionary Workers Organization was a Communism, communist political organization that evolved from the Young Lords, Young Lords Party (YLP), a Puerto Rican civil rights organization, in 1972. Ideologically, the PRRWO adopted Marxism–Leninism, Marxist–Leninist and Maoism, Maoist principles. It also took an Anti-revisionism (Marxism–Leninism), anti-revisionist stance and advocated for Independence movement in Puerto Rico, Puerto Rican independence pending a communist revolution. Organizationally, the PRRWO was characterized by frequent purges, intragroup conflict, and violence against members. Scholars such as Johanna Fernández and Darrel Wanzer-Serrano, as well as former members of the PRRWO, have noted its Authoritarianism, authoritarian tendencies, elitism, and tendency to romanticize the working class. Lead Poisoning
Lead poisoning, also known as plumbism and saturnism, is a type of metal poisoning caused by lead in the body. Symptoms may include abdominal pain, constipation, headaches, irritability, memory problems, infertility, numbness and paresthesia, tingling in the hands and feet. It causes almost 10% of intellectual disability of otherwise unknown cause and can result in behavioral problems. Some of the effects are permanent. Church Offensive
The Church Offensive was a building occupation organized by the New York Young Lords in East Harlem, New York City. During the Church Offensive, the Young Lords occupied the First Spanish United Methodist Church (FSUMC) for 11 days, from December 28, 1969, to January 7, 1970, in protest of the church's refusal to host the Young Lords' free breakfast program. During the occupation, the Young Lords implemented various community service programs, including free breakfasts and health clinics, "liberation school" classes, and dinners for Puerto Rican women. Despite a court order to vacate the church, the Young Lords remained, arguing they had not disrupted services and were challenging the church's inaction. The Garbage Offensive was a community service initiative that evolved into a series of protests that occurred throughout the summer of 1969 in East Harlem, New York, United States. The offensive was organized by the New York Young Lords, a newly-formed civil rights organization.
