York–Bruce Rock Railway Line
The York–Bruce Rock railway line is a closed railway line in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia running from York to Bruce Rock. History On 29 June 1885, the Eastern Railway opened from Chidlow's Well to York. Another line opened south to Beverley on 5 August 1886 and ultimately Albany via the Great Southern Railway. The ''York-Greenhills Railway Act 1896'', an act by the Parliament of Western Australia assented to on 27 October 1896, authorised the construction of the railway line from York to Greenhills. The ''Greenhills-Quairading Railway Act 1906'', assented to on 14 December 1906, authorised the construction of the Greenhills to Quairading section of the railway line. The ''Quairading-Nunajin Railway Act 1911'', assented to on 16 February 1911, authorised construction of a railway line from Quairading to Nunajin, later renamed Bruce Rock. Avon River (Western Australia)
The Avon River is a river in Western Australia. A tributary of the Swan River, the Avon flows from source to mouth, with a catchment area of . Avon catchment area Lake Yealering in the Shire of Wickepin is the point of origin for the upper Avon River, and the catchment size above the confluence with the Salt River at Yenyening Lakes is . The basin covers much of the Western Australian wheatbelt and extends beyond that in some areas near almost-always-dry Lake Moore in the northeast, water is received regularly from only the extreme western edge of the basin. Indeed, until an abnormally wet year in 1963 it was not realised that the northeastern part of the basin beyond Wongan Hills ever drained water into the river. The wheatbelt railway lines of Western Australia were, in most cases, a network of railway lines in Western Australia that primarily served the Wheatbelt (Western Australia), Wheatbelt region. Maps of the Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) system in the 1930s show that in the main wheatbelt region, any railway line was within of the harvest location, facilitating ease of access to rail transport. Most of the larger extent of the network has since been closed. Shackleton, Western Australia
Shackleton is a small town in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. The town is located close to the Salt River and along the disused railway line between Bruce Rock and Quairading. The 2016 population was 96. Originally a railway siding for the railway line when constructed in 1913, the town was developed privately before being gazetted in 1951. The town is named after the Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton. The local Agricultural Hall was officially opened in 1920 by Mr. H. Griffiths MLA; it was built on land provided by Dr. Germyn. The Bankwest branch in the town claimed to be the world's smallest bank. The building measures , but was closed in 1997. The surrounding areas produce wheat and other cereal crops. Yoting, Western Australia
Yoting is a small town located between Quairading and Bruce Rock in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. It was originally a station on the Quairading to Bruce Rock railway line when it was established in 1912. Lots were surveyed in early 1914 and the townsite was gazetted later the same year. The name is Aboriginal in origin and was taken from the nearby Yoting well. The well or spring first appeared on maps in 1873. Western Australian Government Railways (WAGR) was the state owned operator of railways in the state of Western Australia between October 1890 and June 2003. Owned by the state government, it was renamed a number of times to reflect extra responsibility for tram and ferry operations that it assumed and later relinquished. Westrail was the trading name of the WAGR from September 1975 until December 2000, when the WAGR's freight division and the Westrail brand were privatised. WAGR ADE/ADT Class
The WAGR ADE class (also known as the Governor class) was a six member class of diesel railcars operated by the Western Australian Government Railways between 1937 and 1962. History In December 1937, WG Armstrong, Newcastle upon Tyne delivered the first ADE railcar. It was the first diesel-electric rail vehicle to enter service in Australia. It was followed in 1938 by a further five that were delivered in knocked down form and assembled at the Midland Railway Workshops. All were named after Governors of Western Australia, hence the class name.
