Yes! (Slum Village Album)
''Yes!'' is the eighth studio album by studio album by American hip hop group Slum Village. It was released on June 16, 2015, via Yancey Media and Ne'Astra Music Group. Recording sessions took place at RJ Rice Studios in Farmington Hills. Production was handled by members Jay Dee and Young RJ. It features guest appearances from Bilal, BJ the Chicago Kid, De La Soul, Jon Connor, J. Ivy and Phife Dawg. Background The 12-track LP features nine songs produced or co-produced posthumously by the late member J Dilla. Vocals of late members J Dilla and Baatin were also placed on the album. ''Yes!'' also features appearances from De La Soul, Phife, Black Milk, Frank Nitt, Bilal and J Dilla's younger brother Illa J. Slum Village
Slum Village is an American hip hop group from Detroit, Michigan. The group was formerly composed of the rappers Baatin (1974–2009), T3, and rapper / producer J Dilla (1974–2006). J Dilla left in 2001 to pursue a solo career with MCA Records. Elzhi joined in his absence, after which Baatin also left due to health complications. Following J Dilla's death in 2006 and Baatin's death in 2009, T3 remains the sole surviving member of the original lineup. Over its history the group has been through several line-up changes, which once included J Dilla's younger brother Illa J, but now the group exists as a duo of T3 and producer Young RJ. Formation and early years Rappers Baatin, T3 and producer Jay Dee grew up together in the Conant Gardens neighborhood of Detroit and attended Pershing High School together. Jon Kevin Freeman Jr. (born April 13, 1985), better known by his stage name Jon Connor, is an American rapper and record producer. Connor has released various mixtapes and an album effort during his career including the Jay-Z inspired ''The Blue Album'', and the Eminem inspired ''The People's Rapper LP''. "Tom's Diner" is a song by American singer and songwriter Suzanne Vega. Written in 1981 or 1982, it was first released as a track on the January 1984 issue of '' Fast Folk Musical Magazine''. Originally featured on her second studio album, '' Solitude Standing'' (1987), it was released as a single in Europe only in 1987 following the success of her single " Luka". It was later used as the basis for a remix by the British group DNA in 1990, which reached No. 1 in Austria, Germany, Greece and Switzerland. The song is also known for its use in testing various digital compression schemes during the development of the MP3, earning Vega the title of "Mother of the MP3". James Dewitt Yancey (February 7, 1974 – February 10, 2006), better known by the stage names J Dilla and Jay Dee, was an American record producer, composer and rapper. He emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip hop scene in Detroit, Michigan, as a member of the group Slum Village. He was also a member of the Soulquarians, a musical collective active during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He additionally collaborated with Madlib as Jaylib, releasing the album ''Champion Sound''. Yancey's final album was ''Donuts (album), Donuts'', which was released three days before his death. John Derek Yancey (born October 13, 1986), better known by his stage name Illa J, is an American rapper, singer, record producer and songwriter from Detroit, Michigan who has released two albums on Delicious Vinyl Records. Frank Nitt
Frank N Dank (real names Frank Bush and Derrick Harvey) are an American hip hop group from Detroit, Michigan. They also go by the names Frank Nitt (previously known as Frank Nitty, which is a reference to the 1930s crime boss Frank Nitti) and Dankery Harv, and are best known for their many collaborations with the late J Dilla. Known for their party-driven, tongue-in-cheek raps, the duo first came to public attention as guests on producer J Dilla's album, '' Welcome 2 Detroit'' in 2001. Curtis Eugene Cross (born August 14, 1983), better known by his stage name Black Milk, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Career In addition to Slum Village, Black Milk has worked with J Dilla, Elzhi, Phat Kat, Frank-N-Dank, Lloyd Banks, Canibus, Pharoahe Monch, RZA, Danny Brown, Black Thought, T3 and many more throughout his career. In 2004, Black Milk formed B.R. Gunna with Young RJ and Fat Ray.
