Xanten (, Low Rhenish: ''Santen'') is a town in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located in the district of Wesel. Xanten is known for the Archaeological Park, one of the largest archaeological open air museums in the world, built at the site of the Roman settlements '' Colonia Ulpia Traiana''. Other attractions include the medieval town centre with Xanten Cathedral, many museums and large man-made lakes for various watersport activities. Xanten is visited by approximately one million tourists a year. It is also the only German town with a name that begins with ''X''. Colonia Ulpia Traiana
Colonia Ulpia Traiana (sometimes called "Castra Vetera") was a colonia in the Roman province of Germania inferior, founded by emperor Trajan. It was located in the area of today's Xanten. History First camp First settlements in the area by isolated tribes can be dated around the year 2000 BC. Around 15 BC the Roman ''castrum'' (legio camp) was created near modern-day Birten, not far away from the Rhine river. It was intended as a base for campaigns into Germania, and until its destruction during the Revolt of the Batavi in 70 AD, it was occupied by 8,000 to 10,000 legionnaries. It was also called "''Castra Vetera''", and was the main base of the Classis Germanica, because it used an inlet (now called "Bislicher insel") created by the old course of the Rhine river. Xanten Cathedral
Xanten Cathedral (), sometimes called St. Victor's Cathedral (), is a Catholic church situated in Xanten, a historic town in the lower Rhine area, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is considered the biggest cathedral between Cologne and the sea. In 1936 it was declared a minor basilica by Pope Pius XI. Even though the church is called a cathedral, it has never been the seat of a bishop. History The cathedral owes its name to Victor of Xanten, a member of the Theban Legion who was supposedly executed in the 4th century in the amphitheater of Castra Vetera for refusing to sacrifice to the Roman gods. Sonsbeck
Sonsbeck is a municipality in the Wesel (district), district of Wesel, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is situated approximately 20 km west of Wesel, and 25 km south-east of Cleves as well as 8 km from the historic city of Xanten. It is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's wealthiest municipalities. History Antiquity A watchtower was constructed on the Balberg by the Romans for protection of the road between Castra Vetera (near modern Xanten) and Blerick (Netherlands). Uedem is a municipality in the district of Cleves, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located near the border with the Netherlands. Kalkar
Kalkar () is a municipality in the district of Kleve, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is located near the Rhine, approx. 10 km south-east of Cleves. The catholic church St. Nicolai has preserved one of the most significant sacral inventories from the late Middle Ages in Germany. History Kalkar was founded by Dirk VI of Cleves in 1230 and received city rights in 1242. It was one of the seven "capitals" of Cleves (called Kleve), until the line of the Duchy of Cleves died out in 1609, whereupon the city went over to the Margraviate of Brandenburg. Marie of Burgundy, Duchess of Cleves retired to Monreberg castle in Kalkar, where she founded a Dominican convent in 1455.
