Women's football in the Philippines started largely as an amateur sport. Its top tier league, the PFF Women's League, was largely composed of collegiate teams. The national team has competed in several editions of the AFC Women's Asian Cup. History Women's football in the Philippines along with its national team was institutionalized when the ''Philippine Ladies' Football Association (PLFA or PhiLFA)'' was established in 1980 by Cristina Ramos. The women's football association organized a league known as the Philippine Ladies' Football National League in 1981. 2014 AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualification
The 2014 AFC Women's Asian Cup qualification saw 16 nations attempt to qualify for the 2014 AFC Women's Asian Cup football competition. The four winners from all groups joined the four automatic qualifiers in the final tournament. This tournament also served as the first stage of qualification for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup for the Asian zone. The Philippines has competed in ten editions of the AFC Women's Asian Cup, the top tournament for women's national teams organized by members of the Asian Football Confederation. The Philippine first competed in 1981, when the tournament was still known as the "AFC Women's Championship". The national team competed again in 1983 before skipping the next three editions. From 1993 to 2003, the Philippines participated in the tournament but failed to progress beyond the group stage. The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) is the governing body of international football in the country. Football is a popular sport in the Philippines, although basketball has been the most popular historically. However, football has a long history in the archipelago, dating back to more than 100 years ago when Paulino Alcántara Riestra became the first Filipino and Asian player to play for a European club. 1999 AFC Women's Championship
The Asian Football Confederation's 1999 AFC Women's Championship was held from 7 to 21 November 1999 in the Philippines. The tournament was to be originally hosted only in Iloilo City and Bacolod but due to continuous rains affecting the conditions of the pitch at the Iloilo Sports Complex, some matches were held in nearby Barotac Nuevo. The tournament was won by China in the final against Chinese Taipei before an audience of 7,000 at the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod. Match officials 10 referees and 9 assistant referees were selected to officiate the matches. 2016–17 PFF Women's League
The 2016–17 PFF Women's League season is the inaugural of the women's national league of the Philippines. The season started on November 12, 2016 and ended on November 20, 2017. The De La Salle University secured the league title on their first second round match against OutKast winning over the latter, 3–0. Format The league follows a double round robin format. The team with the most points by the end of the season are crowned champions. The first round which was held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium commenced in November 12, 2016 and lasted until July 2017. The second round was initially scheduled to take place from May 20, 2017 to July 16, 2017, three months after the end of the first round at the Biñan Football Stadium. The second round resumed in mid-October at the PFF National Training Centre in Carmona, Cavite with format changes. PFF Women's Cup
The PFF Women's Cup is the national women's football cup of the Philippines organized by the Philippine Football Federation. History The inaugural edition was launched in 2014 by the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and was contested by 10 teams from June to July. The cup was played in a 9-a-side format with two halves of 25 minutes. The following teams participated at the inaugural 9-a-side edition with their division in the group stage: The following edition in 2015 was played in full 90 minutes with 11 field players on each team. 10 teams participated in the match mostly composed by University varsity and alumni teams. In 2016, the PFF Women's League was launched although the PFF would stop organizing the cup tournament. The PFF revived the PFF Women's Cup in late 2022, following two years of inactivity of the women's league due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The competition had eight teams. Cristina Ramos-Jalasco
Cristina Martinez Ramos-Jalasco is a sports executive and former international footballer. Sporting career Ramos-Jalasco was the first President of the Philippine Ladies Football Association (PLFA) which was established in October 1980 in Baguio herself. The PLFA was later absorbed to the Philippine Football Federation. She was a member of the Philippines national team from 1980 to 1986. She was the captain of the Edward Magallona-led squad at the 1981 AFC Women's Championship. She also led the team to a bronze medal finish at the 1985 Southeast Asian Games in the women's football event which was contested by only three teams. She became involved in karate in 1992 and later became the Project Director of the Philippine Karate-do Federation. AFF Women's Championship
The AFF Women's Championship is the competition in women's football organised by the ASEAN Football Federation, contested by the national teams of nations in Southeast Asia and Australia. The official tournament started in 2004, hosted by Vietnam and won by Myanmar.
