William Hill (Australian Politician)
William Caldwell Hill (14 April 1866 – 15 November 1939) was an Australian politician. He was a member of the Country Party and served in the House of Representatives from 1919 to 1934. He was Minister for Works and Railways in the Bruce–Page government from 1924 to 1928. Early life Hill was born on 14 April 1866 at Burnt Creek near Dunolly, Victoria. He was the son of English immigrants Sarah (née Baker) and John Hill; his mother was illiterate. His father and uncle ran the local flour mill, but after the mill burned down the family moved to Stradbroke to take up a selection of uncleared forest. Hill was educated at a part-time school in Stradbroke before joining the clerical division of Victorian Railways. He served as stationmaster at Elphinstone, during which time he would walk several miles to Castlemaine to attend evening classes. William Lowell Hill
William Lowell Hill (October 17, 1855 – August 2, 1922) was a United States Navy officer and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor. He was awarded the medal as an enlisted sailor for rescuing a drowning shipmate in 1881. Hill went on to serve in the Spanish–American War and reached the warrant officer rank of chief boatswain. His lifelong Navy career finished with his command of two prison ships at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Biography Hill was born on October 17, 1855, in Auburn, Iowa, the son of Henry Clay and Margaret (Cater) Hill. He enlisted in the Navy from New York on November 18, 1873. William Hill (businessman)
William Hill (16 July 1903 – 15 October 1971) was the founder of William Hill, the British bookmaking firm. Born in Birmingham, Hill left school at the age of twelve to work on his uncle's farm. While working in a factory in Birmingham he started collecting illegal bets from local people on his motorcycle. In 1919, Hill joined the Royal Irish Constabulary (Cork East Riding - and is documented on the RIC records as such) as a driver while underage (16) and was stationed in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland. After the hopeless failure of his first foray into bookmaking, he moved to London in 1929 where he started taking bets on greyhounds before opening an illicit gambling den in Jermyn Street in 1934. He exploited a loophole which allowed credit or postal betting but not cash. In 1938 he was the joint owner of Lone Keel who went on to win the 1938 English Greyhound Derby. William Hill (blacksmith)
William Hill was Scottish a blacksmith and fabricator of works in iron for James V of Scotland. Hill had a forge in Edinburgh Castle. He made many iron gates and windows grills called yetts. Examples can be seen at Stirling Castle and Blackness Castle. In several other locations fixing holes in the masonry window surrounds can still be seen, especially around the central window of the ruined East Quarter of Falkland Palace, where Hill made a window for the bedchamber "where the king lies". The accounts mention that this yett had 6 upright standards and 14 horizontal "thortouris". These iron window grills were painted with red lead and finished with vermilion. Hill made locks for doors and furniture, and draw bars for security, and hinges and bands for window shutters. William Hill (architect)
William Hill (18 June 1827 – 5 January 1889) was an English architect who practised from offices in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. He was a member of, and designed churches for the Methodist New Connexion. His son William Longfield Hill (1864–1929) succeeded him in the practice, and later joined in partnership with Salmon L. Swann of Sheffield. Early life William Hill was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and educated at the West Riding Propriety School, a Nonconformist school in Wakefield, also in West Yorkshire. In about 1843 he became a pupil in the Leeds architectural practice of Perkin and Backhouse, the town's most successful firm at the time. William Hill (born April 21, 1959) is a former American football cornerback in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys. He also was a member of the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League (USFL). He played college football at the Rutgers University. Early years Hill attended Howell High School, where he played football and baseball. As a sophomore in 1974, he was named the starting running back. As a senior, he received All-Monmouth honors.
